I don't really watch any of the network late night shows, I'd rather watch something amusing and actually consistently funny like The Colbert Report.
That's a very interesting way of putting it and I'd agree to an extent. The only problem I have is that Leno is closer to a 2-year-old slamming away on a xylophone than anything that resembles real music. I honestly think he's that bad at both delivering comedy and interviewing guests.
If you like Jay Leno's comedy and hate Conan than I doubt we would get along. Don't take it personally though, I'm not an ageist.
It's not like the two really have any correlations though, other than they host late night shows. They feature two different types of humor/interview styles, but I'd imagine it's entirely possible to like/dislike them both. In any case, it seems like you are alone (he's always been kind of bland to me) since he has always had a high rating with the Tonight Show....though it seems his new show is struggling a bit.
I really enjoy Conan, but he has a specific, polarizing style of comedy. So much so that I can tell which ones of my friends like and dislike Conan without ever asking them directly.
You don't think that bitterness comes across on his show? I certainly do. Hell, he seems bored most of the time (granted, I hardly ever catch his show, but when I do, he comes across that way). I think he's more authentic because more of the real him comes across on TV. And when hanging out, for me anyway, I'd rather hang with a low key, bitter guy, than the awkward spaz Jay seems to be offstage.
I wouldn't let the majority of the community here be your guide on any matter... i happened to both enjoy Jay Leno and Conan when I was still in my teens... David Letterman has always been hit and miss for me..
I like Leno, I didnt like Conan when he did the late show, but i've started to enjoy his jokes and antics a little more..
Conan wrote for SNL during it's resurgent years (Hartman, Carvey, etc) and the early Simpson years, generally regarded as it's best period. Conversely, Leno sounds like he wrote jokes for Full House. (To be fair, I've heard his stand up is edgier, by how much I don't know.) That's my take on it.
I talked to someone that met him once after he taped a show. I was expecting to hear a celebrity horror story, but she said Dave was actually really friendly, made sure everyone that wanted an autograph or a picture got one, and couldn't have been nicer. Anecdotal evidence to be sure, but you can take it for what it's worth.
just curious, but why. Conan is the only late night show I watch on a regular basis (of course I usually turn it off for the interviews, cause I couldn't care less about what celebs have to say), but his opening scenes are lol funny for me. Jay's old show was fine, nothing clever or groundbreaking, but watchable on occasion, but his new show is a disaster. I just don't think it is funny at all.
Leno's shtick has grown old. I still watch every once and awhile. I am more likely to watch Conan or Letterman nowadays than Leno. I probably watch Jon Steward more than Leno, Conan and Letterman combined.
I like how Leno gets most of his ideas for skits from the Howard Stern show. It's so obvious it's embarrassing. If I had to chose, it would be Letterman because that's who I grew up watching. Now I'm a Colbert/Jon Stewart fan boi.
