I was about to go with my wife last night to get grab some Chinese Food takeout late, but I noticed it was kind of cold outside, so I remembered what this thread said and instead of putting on flip flops I just went barefoot.

I wore Skecher's mandals from ages 15-29. Then I started dating a girl at age 29 who saw that I constantly wore them and told me they were the most laughable and hideous piece of footwear known to mankind. She said that people were likely laughing at me for "dressing like a dorky old man"

i did an informal straw poll of friends over the next few weeks and found that most of them (men and women both) thought they were silly shoes and that I was a doofus for wearing them.

I was shamed into stopping and buying some very expensive dress sandals at nordstrom's - which I wear all the time now.

I really was shocked to learn that people found my mandals to be laughable. I really really had no freaking idea!

But seriously, I had no idea people judged other people on what kind of shoes/flip-flops/sandals they wear. I can understand shirts, pants, even hats….but footwear?? I don’t even pay attention to other people’s footwear, even when I’m making fun of them.

I wear what’s comfortable for me and anyone who has a problem with it can 1) get in their car, 2) set the GPS to Hell, and 3) drive.

You were worried about being thought a doofus so you bought "expensive dress sandals"

    Now THAT'S funny :p

That was my thought as well. Forget the fashion, this is about whether flip-flops are weather appropriate in 44 degree weather. And really, only the wearer can know that.

At the time I had just recently updated all of my dress shoes to higher-end models/brands of shoes at Nordstrom's and saw some really nice dress sandals that I loved. But since I had a ton of mandals at home, I had no need for them.

Once I decided to eliminate mandals from my foot-attire, I decided to go ahead and get the dress sandals. I've worn them exclusively since then (about 3 years ago)

To be fair, it was mostly women (though there were more men than I expected who agreed) that thought the mandals were atrocious...women that I hoped to sleep with in the future... thus a change was necessitated.

Unless you are at the beach, flip-flops are the stupidest things you can wear.

Serious question: what exactly are "dress" sandals?

Okay, well I guess I can understand that. In my case, however, my wife was the one who actually picked mine out. And I bang her pretty much on a daily basis. :)
