Interesting, wasn't expecting Israel and Ireland and am surprised Russia and some of the Middle eastern countries aren't in the list.

I think you'd see more of those countries if they narrowed the definition of rich/poor. As it is, they use 10%, and while there are crazy rich people (and crazy-poor people) in those countries, they aren't 10% of the population, so you end up mixing in a bunch of not-so-rich people. If they used 1%, for example, you might see more of those countries.

THe business week article also says it listed "the worlds most advanced economies" so possibly they did not include all nations. I would have expected India or China to be there too -- but maybe Major's point about the cut-off point played a part.

And here's the wiki link for the data

You can sort by pressing UN GINI -- note the scores for the 'top 11' are the same as in the article. They excluded Africa and most of Latin America (including Mexico, and Brazil). Namibia, Lesotho and Sierra Leone are last of those with scores calculated. China was worse then Hong Kong (46.9 vs 43.4); India would have been between New Zealand and Italy (at 36.8).

The article could have used a little better disclosure on their methodology, me thinks.

It would have been helpful if they listed the score for the most egalitarian countries to give us a frame of reference. How close to zero does anyone get?

    EDIT: Denmark 24.7.
