Sure, we cann't judge how Yao will perform in the NBA by these international competitions. But what I think Yao HAS proven in these couple of games is that he deserves the No. 1 pick.

There was a lot of talk before the draft that Yao's impressive stats in the CBA league means nothing because it was against inferior competition, with a lot of 5-ft-10 Chinese player jokes (BTW, the average height of the Chinese league is 6'8, almost the same as the NBA). But now Yao is doing the same thing against top flight international competition, the best you can find outside the NBA. Any one of these teams are capable of beating a NCAA all-star team. That's why the US has to send Dream Teams to international competition now.

So, while Yao's performance here does not guarantee his success in the NBA, it does prove that he is among the very best out of the rookie players entering the league and deserves his No. 1 status.

    Good post, yeo.

It's nice to see that someone realizes that this is a tune-up tournament, i.e. 'let's try to get our wind, play against someone else for a change, see where we stand with our sets and rotation.'

I'm just encouraged that he appears to be doing well, especially with his shot. 10 for 12 from the field is impressive against anyone.

Yao helps China conquer European champs

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Associated Press

BEIJING -- No. 1 draft pick Yao Ming scored 27 points against European champion Yugoslavia, leading China to a 92-78 victory Tuesday at the Shuanglai Four-Nation tournament.

The 7-foot-5 center was the top selection at last month's NBA draft and will play for the Houston Rockets next season.

Yao's teammate, Menk Bateer, who played for the Denver Nuggets last season, scored seven points in less than 10 minutes.

"China deserved to win,'' Yugoslavia coach Miodrag Baletic said after the game in Taiyuan, in China's northern Shanxi province.

The Chinese lost to Italy 82-65 on Monday, with Yao scoring 28 points.

    China plays Australia on Wednesday.

God, look at the European player. It looks like he drank a pitcher of coffee in the morning and he smoked a pack of cigarettes before the game.
