We all know Morey's bread and butter has been finding players at bargain prices, like trading for Scola and Kyle for pennies, drafting late round gems in Aaron, Carl, Chase, finding and signing players like Von and Pops for the min. Thats all good and gravy. So now what happens when these players are playing well above what they are being paid, and their contracts are expiring soon? And mind you the Super class of free agents of 2010 will be coming up. With some cap room from Tracy's expiring contract, Morey will have to decide whether or not to resign Kyle and Scola or go after a big time free agent.

I can see Kyle getting maybe 25-30 mill. Scola could easily get 50 mill if it wasn't for his age. I don't see him getting more then the 35 mill Trevor got.

The following year won't get any easier for Morey because he will have to make a decision on Aaron, Carl, Battier, Yao and even Chuck. Whats is he going to do with all of them? Will he still make Yao the center piece of the team? There is no way we can sign all of them without going way over the cap. So whatever Morey decides to do in the next 2 years will make or brake him.
    Flame suit on.

Why are we still setting up tests for morey? He's a great track record... and delivered year after year. There's no make or brake anymore. He's a talent. and we're lucky to have him.

Because his approach is different, and it remains to be seen if its a good way to build a championship team or just a good way to build an overachieving team.

I understand what you mean - we're seeing how his approach works in different situations...

Keep in mind, every year, amongst the 30 teams, there is only one GM (regardless of approach) who is able to prove their ability to build a championship team.

I think his track record is more important than what he accomplishes in 2010...

When you say year after year, I guess you mean last year and the year before.

Morey has obviously done a great job, but he has only partially built this current team. Yao and Tracy, who consume the vast majority of the current payroll had nothing to do with Morey. It will definitely be interesting to see what Morey will do next year, and finding undervalued roll players is a COMPLETELY different thing than landing an all-star or a super-star talent.

At a certain point in basketball, I would think the most advanced statistical analysis would be inadequate. The best superstars may not be 10X better than the best role players, but they will still earn 10X the salary of the role players because they are so much rarer. In statistical analysis, bigger sample sizes provide more accurate results. Typically, you throw out the highest and lowest because there are always aberrant factors that will skew the results. With super-star players - they are the aberrant factors. They don't really earn what they are worth. They earn as much as you are allowed to pay them.

There also aren't many overlooked super-stars. They're all getting their minutes and everyone knows about them.

Morey has set values and practices... if he doesn't differ, I think he, Rick and Les will lead this team to a championship.

An excellent point. You can only have so many overachievers on your team and you can only play 5 at a time.

He doesn't even have to win a championship, necessarily. If he can construct a team that consistently gets deep into the playoffs, I think he's done his job. After that, its up to the coaches/players to win it all.

Yes, the GM's job is to give the coaches and players the resources to win a championship. After the 2 championships, Dawson consistently gave us fatally flawed teams. We never really had a chance.

It isn't just Rockets fans watching Morey. Over the next few years, a lot of NBA owners will be waiting to see how successful he can be.

I have to agree with the O.P. If Magic Morey can do a good enough job to still be in our good graces after the next 2 years, after being handicapped in the 1st one, he will be able to walk into Les' office and do a Duanta Robinson....PAY ME LES

all these guys are mid level guys ... in the NBA today people are constantly holding out for max players and it's a heavy competition to get signed at the MLE ... the rest of the people get worked in as the salary cap allows ...

I thought it was cool for Morey to go all the way to Toronto for a preseason game, most G.M's wouldn't do that.

The true test will be seeing if Morey can do anything to bring us a superstar. We would trade all our supporting talent to do that, because in theory Morey could just find some other bargains off the waiver wire like he's been doing the past three years.

the only person i can see leaving this team for money elswhere would be landry

he showed signs of leaving 2 years ago when he got an offer from the bobcats plus he wants a starting job and that cant happen if we still have scola.
