Anyone remember that store called BEST? There was one behind Almeda Mall back in the day. It had a unique, crumbling-facade architecture. Turns out, each store nation-wide had a different, art-inspired design. Here's a quick 5 minute documentary.
They sure don't make 'em like they used to...

Part One has the Houston store:

You can check parts 2-4 when you get to youtube, if you care. Pretty cool concept.

Yeah, I remember that. Their prices were so-so.

    I also remember Federated Superstores.

And then Incredible Universe came to town with an in-store McDonalds and a circus ring, trying to make people forget that they came to the store to buy a VCR and to disguise the fact that their prices were three times higher than anybody else in town.

    Federated's commercials were the best!!

Cant forget about Auchan. The Frenchies are pretty much responsible for modern day Walmart design since its a direct ripoff of the Auchan (Sam Walton literally snuck in cameras to film their day to day operations) in Houston (Auchan only had franchises in houston and chicago and the Chicago one was a grocery store basically)

I remember going into an Auchan in Houston. It was (and is to this day) the largest store I've even been in. It was HUGE, at least twice the size of a Super WalMart. I loved that place.

A VCR for $799.32???? No wonder they went out of business.

Lol. Yes, they used to be that expensive. I recall my folks first VCR cost about $1,000. It was a top loader with a wired remote.

And the greatest thing about it as a kid was that I could take the quarters out of the carts that people were too lazy to put back to the correct places. :)

I tripped out when I saw it in an art history text book. They've since remodeled it.

Yours was fancier than ours. We had one of the first ones, with huge levers on the front, not buttons.

I still remember the extremely loud clunking noises that thing made.
