Fife decides best shot in NBA is with Houston

    By Terry Hutchens

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Dane Fife came close to accepting an invitation from the Indiana Pacers to participate in the club's minicamp, which begins Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Instead, the former Indiana University guard has decided he may have a better opportunity with the Houston Rockets.

Fife leaves Saturday for Newport Beach, Calif., to participate in the Rockets' three-day minicamp. If he survives there, he hopes to be invited to play on Houston's summer league team.
"It just came down to the Rockets because they have an open spot at the backup (shooting) guard and that's my position," Fife said.

Fife, a 6-4 guard known for his defensive abilities, also received a minicamp offer from Toronto. He said Miami also showed interest but didn't make an offer..

"There's too many players in the NBA that I know I can guard," Fife said. "I just think it's a matter of my offense, and being able to knock down shots." Fife was named co-Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

If Fife doesn't catch on in the NBA, he's leaving his options open. He said he's already received interest from two teams in the Italian League.

Can anyone shed a little more lite on this Fife player. It sounds like he is a defensive specialist. I guess he'll be fight with Torres for the backup shooting guard spot.

Do we need another 6'4" guard?

    os

PS...the only Fife I know is Deputy Barney.

This alone should get him into our minicamp. Maybe he could teach our guards a little about playing defense.

    I think he's Barney Fife's grandson.

I love this kid. He would be a sweet pickup. His defense is awsome and he can knock down the open jumper. Not a creator on offense. Very smart basketball player.

I welcome anybody who can bring some tough hardnose defense to this team. We need that defensive stopper to come off the bench and at least slow-down and harra$$ the other teams best back court player.

    Dane Fife. Hmn.

Very good defender. Good at taking the flop...er, charge. Fired-up, energy kind of guy. As an Iowa Hawkeye fan, I hated his guts (he was a Hoosier), but would have liked him on the Hawks.

I don't know if we would actually have an end-of-the-bench spot for him, though.

He's the kind of smart guard that we need that knows what to do in certain situations. It would be a good pickup for the Rockets but I just don't see him beating out Maddox, Brown, and Oscar. This minicamp and the summer league arn't going to showcase his skills.

If I remember correctly, Fife was a big part of Indiana's defensive effort throughout the NCAA tourney this past year. Give him a shot.

His defense is overrated. He can defend college players pretty well, but I don't see where all the hype was when Dixon was lighting him up. Yeah, and the NBA players are a helluva alot more athletic...That's nice to invite him, but I'd be surprised if he made the summer league team and actually got playing time. His offensive ability is next to nothing, but he does have those Indiana basketball smarts...

Dixon lit everyone up...including the 2nd and 3rd picks in the draft.

True...but my point is Fife's great "defense" won't be so great against NBA players, I didn't think it was anything amazing in college even though people would always rave about it...

Sphere--he isn't, this is a minicamp invitation, not even a summer league spot...
I don't know how many spots are available for guards, but I'd say Tierre, Tito & Oscar are locks so we'll see if Kyle or Fife make it...But this is the team who invited SAUL FREAKING SMITH...that guy sucks...

Anyways, I don't remember Pete Mickeal playing at Cinci, but he was their leading scorer and in the ABA he averaged:
    23ppg 7 rpg 3asst 1 stl
    He's 6'5 & 230, drafted #58 in 2000, averaged 14 points at Cinci

So I hear he's a perimeter defender, but we'll see how good he is...

He wont take Oscar's spot, hes not good enough. I say sign Torres (20 pt. games against kings and spurs and 28 on 10-11 shooting against the lowly cavs) He is a solid backup 2, hvae fun this summer Dane.

Pete Mickael is the player that really jumped out at me on the roster. 2 yrs ago, Mickael was the best on the ball defender in college imo but had absolutely zero offensive game to speak of. He played with a lot of fire and had this real tough physical defensive style which used his strong 230 pound frame effectively. He slid big time in the draft b/c he only measured at SG size as opposed to the 6-7 that Cincy listed him at. It will be interesting to see if Mickael has worked on his ball handling and outside shot over the last 2 yrs. If he has, I think he could find a niche in the NBA as a Mario Elie or Bruce Bowen type player. Should be interesting to see...

If I remember correctly, he was basically playing on one leg in the championship game.
