Yao Ming did not disappoint in his first game since becoming the No.1 draft pick in the 2002 NBA Draft. Yao scored 26 on 10-12 shooting and made 6 of 9 free throws in the first game vs. Italy in the 4-Nation Tournament. However, China lost to Italy 65-82. Itlay made 13 3-pointers in the game.

In the other game, Australia lead the whole game and defeated Yugoslavia, 79-68. Yugoslavia was without its top players like 7-1 Ratko Varda and 6-11 Vladimir Radmanovic.

China NT also played without its top player Wang Zhi-zhi, who is in LA to hone his skills. Head coach Wang Fei already has his atrating lineup in mind which includes Yao at center, Wang at PF, Lee Nan at SF, veteran Hu Wei-dong at SG and Liu Wei at PG.

China's best player, Wang Zhi-Zhi? Who is this guy writing this article?

I think in China, Wang was the best. Yao never won until after Wang left China. Of course, there is the argument that Yao is younger and is just now coming into his own.

In Nigeria, Yommie Basket was the top player, but Hakeem is the one that's gonna be in the Hall of Fame.

It looks like Shaq has some bad B.O. Wang looks like he is about to pass out.

    Oops! My bad.

Nice pics, Windandsea. I still recall that TNT had that game on in which Wang ball-faked KG and KG totally went for it. Next thing you know, KG fell hard onto the floor.

Instead of saying it's a nice ball-fake, or that either KG respected Wang's outside shot or it's a dumb move on KG's part, the instant comments from the two basketball gurus were:

Barkley: Why did he have to fake?
Kenny Smith: Does he know how to shoot?

It goes to show when people are biased, there's nothing you can do to change your mind.

Just converted to be a Rockets fan. Live in Dallas. Howdy.

I am a Chinese. May I explain why Wang Zhi-zhi is viewed as the best Chinese bbll player by many in China.

    Fact:
Wang led his team to N consecutive CBA champs before he left for NBA. Yao's team beat Wang's former team without Wang.

    Emotion:
Wang's former team, BaYi Rockets (that's correct) has been synonymous to the national team in the last several decades. They have huge fan base. Then comes Yao Ming. Not all people are conviced he is the best in China.

    IMHO:
Both Yao and Wang have potential to be decent NBA players. Yao got a golden opportunity with the Rockets. Wang is less lucky. But given playing time, he can be a starter.

I have a true story about Yao Ming I don't think many of you know. I was told by my mom who just came to visit me from Shanghai. Before I tell it, let me say N thanks to Clutch, Jeff and company that make this BBS by far the best sports BBS in the land.

    Story:
Before Yao Ming was born, his parents already had a child. That is, Ming has an old bro or sis. At that time, a.k.a, 1980's, China was enforcing one-child policy. According to that policy, there was no way Ming's parents could have another child, i.e., Ming.

However, some sports officials in my hometown Shanghai thought it would be a huge opportunity lost if Ming's parents could not have another shot, i.e., Ming. Part of it was they already knew Ming's older bro or sis could not be a great bbll material. Part of is was that Ming's parents were a rare bbll couple with true telants.

So, those Shanghai sports officials sent a petition on Ming's parents behalf to the Chinese central government in Beijing, asking its approval for Ming's parents to have another child. It was opproved. They had Ming as their second child.

This is a bitter and sweet story. My purpose of posting this story is that:
    a. I love this BBS,
    b. I like both sides, positive or negative on Ming or any player,
    c. Hope all Chinese fans stay out of politics here.

Dream is the greatest. I watched both finals the Rockets won back then. Ming has a great example. Hope he does well for all of us fans.

    Jim

Okay I may have misinterpreted Oski's post. He used the word was the best and not is, my bad. That is the key he was the best he is no longer the best and if he went back surely Yao would school him. If I am wrong why did we draft Yao.

I get tired of people using Zhi Zhi and his dominance over Yao when he was much younger and say that we shouldn't expect much more from Yao. Cuban said he wasn't so impressed with Yao and he had a center who scored 40 on him. That's just dumb and any analogy that says because Wang did this to Yao and then the NBA did this to Wang then the NBA centers will do this to Yao is also ridiculously dumb.

If Yao is not head and shoulders an all around better player than ZHi Zhi than why did we pick him # 1. We should have waited till the second round.

It is my understanding that the Bayi Rockets (which Wang played for) is the Army team and they have a much better crop of talent than any other team in the CBA. The Rockets had won something like 5 or 6 straight titles until this year when the Shanghia Sharks led by Ming defeated them and took the title. Ming apparently had hardly any help but still won the title.

    Lets compare Kobe and Francis....

What, you say it is unfair to compare because of Shaq. Well that's my point. If Wang had a better team around him, his team should win the title. If Francis was playing with Shaq and all we had was Kobe, then the Lakers would still be champs and we would still be looking for an answer for Shaq.

Wang is a good player but Ming did more with less. Don't confuse team success with player success.
