We hardly knew ya !! http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/sports/bk/bkn/1480825 You have skills, but unfortunatly you need the ball in your hands to be sucessful and that is not going to happen in Houston. Good luck to you !! DaDakota
Also notice the article said the Rocks did not pick up Oscar's option.. I hope this is not true as I think Oscar is an NBA player for sure, much better then Tmo. For those who don't wish to click... __________________________________________ Langhi left off summer list Nachbar to make Rockets debut at California camp By JONATHAN FEIGEN Copyright 2002 Houston Chronicle The Rockets' Summer Pro League team will set up the start of several interesting battles for roster spots with one telling omission. Dan Langhi, a second-round Rockets pick in 2000 and a star of the team's previous two summer teams, was not included on the team that was announced Tuesday, likely indicating the end of his Rockets tenure. With Glen Rice, first-round pick Bostjan Nachbar and Terence Morris under contract on a team with few roster spots open and 12 players already signed to guaranteed contracts, the Rockets did not pick up their option on Langhi's contact, making him the apparent odd man out. The Rockets also did not pick up their option on guard Oscar Torres' contract. But Torres is included on the summer league team and will have a chance to earn a roster spot that came to him easily as an offseason find last summer. Torres and Tierre Brown could find themselves competing with second-round pick Tito Maddox for a backup guard position. Maddox could get playing time at both guard spots. The summer league team still could add Rice and Maurice Taylor. Both are scheduled to work out with the team and have asked to play in some of the Rockets' seven games at Long Beach (Calif.) State. Because both missed more than 25 games last season, they would not count against the Rockets' allotment of veterans under league rules. General manager Carroll Dawson said Taylor has appeared to be progressing well from his Achilles' tendon surgery during rehabilitation during workouts at Westside Tennis Club. Dawson said the team will measure Rice's progress since January knee surgery before deciding whether he will play for the summer league team. The Rockets might, depending on workouts, add Rice and Taylor to the team, Dawson said. "He missed a year, but he's a pro," Dawson said of Rice. "It's surprising that he wants to do it, but it's encouraging, too. Mo's playing right now, and the reports are good." Last summer's draft picks, Eddie Griffin and Morris, are also scheduled to play at Long Beach. Kyle Hill, a guard whose rights the Rockets acquired in the three-team sign-and-trade deal that sent Shandon Anderson to New York, will play for the Rockets for first time. Hill played last season in Europe. Nachbar is also scheduled to see his first action with the Rockets. Center Ike Nwankwo, who played for the Rockets through last preseason, will return to his college for the summer games. "It's big for Oscar, Eddie, Terence, Jason (Collier)," Dawson said. "It's an important summer. When you've got young people, the more experience you get, the more you can grow." But the most interesting competition might be in the backcourt. "We like (Torres') size and body and strength," Dawson said. "He has a good shooting touch. He started out very well shooting the ball. He didn't finish as strong. That's one of the things we're going to be looking at. "Tierre had a pretty good year. It's going to be good to see him with this team." The Rockets are no longer sending a team to the Rocky Mountain Revue, a summer league in Salt Lake City. The NBA's first overall pick, 7-5 Yao Ming of the Shanghai Sharks, is not expected to join the Rockets until mid-October. _____________________________________ DaDakota
Man he could jump, but he couldn't hit a shot when it counted. I hope he does well somewhere else. I hope Oscar can earn a spot, he needs to get his shot back from the beginning of last season.
Torres is not gone, he is still going to LA with the Rockets. It is a small gamble not picking up the option, but competition is a good thing. Doubly so, since only two of the three "T's" (Torres, Tito, and Tierre) are likely to be kept around. I'm psyched that Mo Taylor and Glen Rice have *asked* to play in some of the summer games...that's at least a little bit "above and beyond."
Don't panic with Oscar. He'll still be on the summer league team and he'll probably be tendered an offer in training camp.
"the Rockets did not pick up their option on Langhi's contact, making him the apparent odd man out". -That is not right. They had the option to pick up the guy's contact and they chose to make him the odd man out. Sorry, there is a good joke somewhere that could come from this typo & clearly I have not found it
Don't be shocked if the Magic pick up Dan Langhi, especially if Pat Garrity's asking price becomes too steep. He's viewed as having a game much like Garrity's, except that he's a bit rawer and a couple of inches taller. But since he's tall and has a good jumpshot, some team will give him a shot, that much I know.
Langhi had the physical skills but he was too nervous on the court. I think he should play a few years in Europe and then come back to the league when he is more experienced and less querulous.
Good luck Langhi. I hope you find a good place to further your career. We won't curse you too much if you turn into a Rocket-killer =)
Hmmm. Can't say I'm too surprised about Lanky...kind of figured this would happen after his 'outburst' last year. He could use some time in Europe, anyway... Of the 3Ts; I think Tierre will be the one given the pink slip... Torres will definitely be here for defensive purposes...
Langhi is a perfect example of why the NBA needs a farm system. I have no doubt in my mind that with a couple of years of steady playing Langhi could be a contributor for a good team. Unfortunately with the salary cap and limited roster space, players like this fall through the cracks ALL the time.
I was excited when we picked Langhi up,but unfortunately he didn't succeed on the court. He could still turn out to be a productive player with time.I wish him good luck in the future.
