Seeing serena on the cover of SI: the body addition got me thinking about how athletes have gotten enormus and I wonder if serena would have been able to over power Mcenroe?

I'm pretty sure Serena's serve would be the fastest McEnroe would ever see. Serena is a freak of genetics and is probably more intimidating then any player McEnroe played.

Considering that Serena loses to non-descript women players throughout any given season, McEnroe in his prime would probably not lose a set to her.

So would John McEnroe in his prime beat a Serena Williams who is no longer in her prime. I would think so.

That's a tough question. Could one of the best groundstrokers and top 10 player in the history in men's tennis handle Serena's below average (for the men's game) serve?

Man not sure. Mac was physically 2 inches/15 lbs bigger than Serena and stronger but he'd definitely be intimidated. I'm sure he'd find Serena at 5'9" more intimidating than 6'2" Pete Sampras who could supposedly dunk from a standing position.

    Is this a joke?

McEnroe in his prime would annihilate Serena in her prime on her best day.

The 250th ranked man in the world at any given time would easily beat Serena in her prime.

Don't use that story about Serena beating Roddick either. They were 10-years-old at the time and girls develop physically much earlier than boys.

Why would you think that? She's shorter and lighter yet he'd be scared? That doesn't make sense.

She might win 1 out of 10 sets against Patrick Mcenroe.

She could beat him today....but I am reasonably certain that up until about 5 years ago he would have beaten her. She is an incredible physical specimen and very talented...

Connors played Navratalova when she was 34 and he was 40...she got to use the doubles lines he only got one serve and he won easily.

u cant possibly vote 'yes', anyone who excels at something is 'ahead of their time', decades have passed, the average skill of the players have increased, serena would beat mcenroe(in their prime), not a problem at all

the same holds true for most sports

To put it in comparison, Mcenroe use to crush Yannick Noah who was 6'4" 180 lbs. and had dreadlocks.

Your argument holds true without the gender difference. You could use it to argue that a good Div-1 BCS team could have beaten the undefeated Miami Dolphins. But when you put the biological differences between men and women into the equation it makes it different.

Remember that a pro athlete is already the best of the best. So even if a Serena is strong and skilled enough to beat 99.7 percent of everybody who ever picked up a racket regardless of gender, it still isn't enough.

She would not beat him today. In his prime, he would have beaten her 6:0/6:0 10 out of 10 times.

Serena and Venus both played against a German dude called Karsten Braasch who was like top 100 at best and who was known as a smoker, drinker and party animal. He played with half effort and beat both of them 6:1, if I remember correctly (the 1 game each of them won probably because he wanted to be kind).

    Ok, just looked it up:

    Karsten Braasch

Karsten Braasch (born 14 July 1967 in Marl, North Rhine-Westphalia) is a professional German tennis player. His highest ATP singles ranking is 38th, which he reached on 13 June 1994. His career high in doubles was at 36 set at 10 November 1997.

Braasch competed in a 'Battle of the Sexes' contest against Venus Williams and Serena Williams at the 1998 Australian Open when he was ranked 203. A decade and a half older than the sisters, Braasch "was a man whose training regime centred around a pack of cigarettes and more than a couple bottles of ice cold lager."[1] He nonetheless handily defeated the sisters in an individual set, 6–1 on Serena, 6–2 on Venus, while rubbing it in by smoking cigarettes during the changeover.[2][3]

seriously? Mcenroe would crush her. A better question would be whether she would win a game. Probably not.

I accidentally voted no, I thought the question was could Serena beat Mcenroe. :)

hahahaha, karsten braasch. i remember he played for us in the davis cup and he really, really sucked.

that quote about his games versus venus and serena made me laugh even more.

dude sucked as a tennis player, didn't even try too hard and still dominated them at will.

btw: anyone who voted that mcenroe in his prime couldn't have beaten serena williams really has no clue about the game of tennis.

Nope, because the player in question would also have developed in this era, meaning superior training, superior nutrition, probably bigger size with that nutrition. What distinguishes champions is the mental aspect anyways there are dozens of guys who can crush a serve bigger than Fed, he wins because he's the one who can turn it on at 4-4 in the 2nd set. You take the top 5 guys, top 10 guys of ANY sport all of them would be top tier today.

The only question in tennis has to do with the fact that players before Mcenroe played with wooden racquets. If you made modern players play with em, without the forgiveness of compositite raquets, it's no exaggeration that 75% of then wouldn't even be on the tour.

and whose son, I hear, is quite the looker

    In a fist fight?

I dunno . . Mac had a temper but i never thought he was a fighter
and he may have had a glass Jaw. Serena is small and compact.
She could get with in his arm length . . . . I think she could lay him out

    Rocket River
. . oh . . you talking about in a game of Tennis?
