Detroit Pistons Open Practice Set for October 10
    Tuesday, September 29, 2009

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - The Detroit Pistons will host an open practice inside The Palace of Auburn Hills on Saturday, October 10 from 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Admission is free for all fans and doors will open at 11:30 a.m.
"The open practice is a great event where our fans can come out and get a preview of this year's team," said Joe Dumars, Pistons President of Basketball Operations. "Having the practice free to the public is a great way to kick-off training camp and get the community excited about the upcoming season."

Pistons players will practice on the court beginning at 12:30 p.m. Coca-Cola has teamed with the Pistons and will provide refreshments and free preseason tickets. In addition, the event will feature a number of exciting opportunities for those in attendance. Pistons coaches will be on the microphone at the beginning of the practice to provide interaction with the fans while the 2009-10 Pistons Dance Team "Automotion" and Pistons mascot Hooper will perform along with the Pistons Flight Crew.

"Coca-Cola has always been about small moments of refreshment -- something we all could use - so we're inviting people to enjoy an ice-cold Coca-Cola, a hot dog and a game, all free of charge," said Mike Alter, Marketing Development Manager for Coca-Cola. "It's a little break that everyone can enjoy."

You're acting like the people of Detroit can afford to do things that cost money. I don't see that ever happening in a strong energy/corporate market like Houston where the money+demand will always be there.

That's a nice thing to do, maybe they're trying to get the homeless off the streets and into a nice air conditioned arena with a full meal. :p

Clutch, was my "I have an idea" thread okay? I just love this site and the Rockets and thought it would be a good idea, as a way to represent.....

That's how it should be. It gets fans involved and it's all free. The fans will show love in return by buying tickets for regular season games. Nice marketing.

Great idea. People that have rarely or never been to a game will enjoy themselves and want to return for a regular season game.

and that makes this a bad thing? it's a nice move by coca-cola and the detroit pistons, regardless of the economic situation of the city. nothing wrong with spreading goodwill around, especially when times are tough.

i think this should be done league wide for one preseason game per team.

i've been lucky enough to be able to afford really good tickets to a few games a year, but i feel for the guy who can't afford to take his family. the nba can afford it.

I have to agree, this is Detroit we are talking about. They have been hit by hard times, probably hardest of any major US city. Coca Cola are probably just trying to give back to the community. It's probably more than just that as Coca Cola sales may be dropping in the area.

Everyone in the world knows the phrase "no such thing as a free lunch". This is almost a perfect example. In addition to Coca Cola just trying to be a nice company, they are getting the unsaid benefit of good publicity and marketing. Houston is most likely meeting their quota so no free stuff for us.

Even so, I wish they did do that here. Would definately take time off work for it.

I went to that for the Pistons last year and it was a good time. Their season ticket holders thing two years ago were a lot of fun as well and I'm not even a real Pistons fan.

Sounds to me like the Pistons' open practice embarasses the Rockets' just on length, forget about the perks.

Sorry, but you ppl are forgetting to go to Detroit's open practice... You'll have to live in detroit or around it. Yeah...

Not saying detroit isn't a beautiful city, but come on. It's detroit.

It's Detroit, so I think there's obviously a more sensitive handle on things for the Pistons.

But I agree with Clutch, in that they did handle things extremely well and it's good to see they are compassionate about the situation.

Or if you're unemployed in Detroit, enjoy a free lunch and some AC'ed entertainment.
