90% of the time I eat in with a microwave dinner or a sandwich, but today I had the $3.99 chicken tender combo at Sonic, and I have to say, it was a GREAT deal. Chicken tenders, fries, onion ring (notice that's not plural), toast, gravy and a drink. I was very pleased with the amount of food you get for only $3.99. This got me thinking, what are some other good lunch deals that are out there? Yes, I know you can get a microwave dinner for $1.99 or buy a loaf of bread, peanut butter and jelly and eat off of that for a week, but I'm asking about actually eating out. What are some of your favorite "deals" while eating out for lunch?

I think in general, you can find combo meals for under $5 at any fast food restaurant, lol. Just find a coupon in your mailbox and it's even cheaper!

    In Austin...

Hoa Hoa Chinese Restaraunt (corner of W. 21st St. and Guadelupe on campus) - $7 for sesame chicken, steamed or fried rice, and a cup of sweet and sour soup. Generous servings, and quick service. I usually get it to go.

Texadelphia (on the drag) - $6-7 for a cheesesteak, chips and salsa, and a drink.

Thundercloud Subs (I go to the locations on Riverside and Guadelupe) - Large Classic Club (ham, turkey, bacon, cheese, and you choice of toppings) or the large Mesquite grilled chicken for $5-6.

Has anyone tried Souper Salad? Do they serve anything else besides soup and salad? I do have a coupon for it, but its also 40 mins. from my house, so I don't want to go if all they serve is salad and soup.

There's one right down the street from me. They also have some pasta/potato salad's, taco's, pizza, a few different types of bread and some desserts. I think they have baked potatoes too, but I could be wrong. I probably left a couple of things off. If you're going to go there, I wouldn't plan on solely relying on those things though, it's called Souper Salad for a reason ;)

All of those are great choices. It's amazing that Hoa Hoa is still around. It was there when I was a freshman back in '98. The student combo at Texadelphia is solid too.

But, if you're talking about campus area, you've forgotten:

Niki's Pizza: 2 slices + Pepsi for $4.50 in Dobie Mall
Egg Roll Stand off 21st St: Fried Rice + egg roll for like $3.50.

There's no way that egg roll stand is still there. Weren't they busted for selling stolen electronics at that stand some time in the late 90s? I remember hearing about it after I graduated.

You're thinking of the one on Guadalupe, which was raided back then for selling all kinds of stolen goods including fishing poles. I went back to UT for grad school from '06-'08, and used to eat at the egg roll stand off 21st St about once a week.

wait, so you risk getting in trouble in order to save $.70?

does Jack in the Box still do the Burger/Taco/Fries/Drink deal?

Vietnamese sandwiches are delicious and very cheap...lots of places near downtown.

Most places I go to have added 50 cents to their Vietnamese sandwiches so 2 of them is right at 5 bucks. Better than Subway.

I also love going to Hong Kong Chef on Bissonnet by the HEB right after it crosses Bellaire. You can get Sweet and Sour Chicken or Pork with fried rice for just under 5 bucks. They've got other specials around the 5 dollar mark.

Jack in the Crack doesn't have the Big Deal anymore, but they have 3.99 deal where you get a Bonus Jack (looks way better than a big mac), fries, and a drink. Most fast food combos are in the 5 dollar and up range.

I remember seeing that and thinking it was a great deal, but never had a chance to try it. I'd definitely put that up there with the Sonic combo.

For those of you near Chinatown:
    - $5.99 Thai Spice Express lunch includes rice, 3 items off their buffet entrees for that day, and soup. The food is great and it's a good value (Bellaire @ Mary Bates)
    - $4.00 Hong Kong City Mall lunch cafeteria items include 2 choices off any of their featured entrees and rice. Portions large enough to take home and its decent quality food.
