I think in most cases it's just parallel thinking and not conscious theft. Though on Yellow Ledbetter, Mike McCready did say Little Wing inspired him on that song, so I see your point. But I mean that song wasn't on any album, they released it as a b-side to Jeremy. How often since the 60s and 70s do B-sides even get played on radio anymore? So I don't know why you'd think less of Pearl Jam based on that song. Really I think it's when you hear something similar close together in time, in your mind you start filling one song into the other until your convinced they are too similar to be a coincidence. For example, on one of EA's MLB games, they used this song by the Bravery called Honest Mistake. I had that song stuck in my head from playing the game so much. Then I heard the Long Mix version of U2's Two Hearts Beat As One and I couldn't help but think they were way too similar: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/dimwUMrcPys&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/dimwUMrcPys&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ji4m9__Ukb8&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ji4m9__Ukb8&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Come on music snobs, you would listen to one Muse song and say "omg radiohead ripoffs!" Knights of Cydonia? Come on, you can't be serious. Their sound is NOTHING like Radiohead. Bellamy's voice is quite similar to Yorke's, that is where the comparison ends.
What makes me mad is that those copycat emmeffers singing "Under Pressure" copied that awesome song from Vanilla ICE. I am so mad. ARGH!
You have to understand. Every male British singer that uses falsetto is clearly ripping off Radiohead. Seriously people, listen to ONE complete album before you make that call. Because if you had, you would never say that they're ripping off Radiohead. Not even close.
Muse certainly are imposters as evidenced below. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tn2qKraB1lQ&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tn2qKraB1lQ&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Oddly, I have the same amount of respect for "muse" as I did before... in fact maybe a bit more for not having a video posted like that Battles Atlas video. Really? In Battles defense, it's probably harder to do that while that instrument is on his back getting in his way. Same category as Pearl Jam? Coldplay? I don't even like Coldplay and they're not in the same category. Not exactly a huge pearl jam fan either (some I like better than others), but come on now. I do like the syncopated off beat, but it's been done. well before Battles or Muse, as others have pointed out. The two songs are very similar, but obscure enough that most would not care if they even noticed. That's what happens when there isn't much to the music to differentiate it. I guess in their defense, when you imitate a simpler, less unique and stylized song it's not as egregious as imitating something with a distinct or more original sound. Probably we don't have the same taste, that's cool. Had the thread title been more specific, I might not have bothered to bother. I don't mean to install a screen door on your submarine.
I can't believe some of the people ragging on Battles. Their album released in 2007, was on the most critically acclaimed and mind blowing albums of the year and has led this math rock re-emergence that is all the craze now as evidenced by recent smash hits by bands like the Foals and Mew. The Battles "Mirrored" album was revolutionary in 2007 and will probably be regarded even more so in about 20 years.
ok i see that the singer matt bellamy is playing drums and the drummer playing bass/singing, bass player playing lead matt bellamy....looks like batman lite ps. i don't care what anyone says. I think this band is talented and bellamy is a very good musician.
Mew got big from And the Glass Handed Kites, which came out in 2005, two years before Mirrored even came out.

Oasis already did it on Top of the Pops. Though it is funny that they kept the charade up during the interview and the host didn't even know.
I guess that's directed at me, since there isn't a lot of bashing going on or anything... and mostly I just thought the video was kinda silly. I was more addressing muse making something that sounded similar, ala the OP, and the simplicity of the parts that were similar (meaning it wouldn't be that hard to be considered ripping it off since the elements are constant and the variations sparse.) . The beat is the main similarity, and it's nothing new. Haven't heard the "officially" most critically acclaimed mind blowing album from 2007.... just saw and heard what the OP posted. They might be giants. Maybe worth a listen... just don't make me watch that video again. Watching Muse perform on that Italian show though, I can see I'd prefer the Battles myself if asked to choose.
