So, there has been this song that I've been trying to figure out what it is called for like the past 4 years. All I knew from the song was the beginning guitar riff. No lyrics, no chorus, nothing. The only clue is that I had the recollection that I had heard the song during a Vietnam montage and that it was like a 60s/70s rock song. I had a feeling it might be on the Forrest Gump soundtrack because I remembered Vietnam scenes in that movie. I listened through that entire soundtrack and it wasn't there. I even looked on youtube for Vietnam montages set to classic rock and had no luck. I sit down to eat tonight, flip through the channels, and see Forrest Gump is on. Within 30 seconds of it being on, THE SONG COMES ON. My eyes grow wide and I can't believe my luck. The guitar riff that has haunted my mind for years can finally be put to rest. I wait for the commercial, grab my laptop, rewind the DVR, and start typing the only two lines of lyrics that are sung from the song during the movie: "There must"...and if my mind hadn't already been blown my my good luck, Google's top recommendation for autofill, after only typing in those two words, is the entire two lines of lyrics: "There must be some way out of here, said the joker to the thief." My only explanation is that thousands of people over the US must have done the exact same thing that I just did. Either that, or Google has become sentient... The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along The Watchtower, was the song.
That's a pretty popular song. Dylan, Hendrix, U2, Dave Matthews. A lot of bands have done it. Not shocking that you found the song through only a small part of the lyrics.
Originally a Bob Dylan song, I believe he liked Hendrix's version so much he said it belongs to Hendrix. I loved how it was used in the Watchmen too (credit to Alan Moore of course).
I'm 25-years old. I knew I had heard the song plenty of times in the past, but the city I live in doesn't have a classic rock station. It has an oldies station, but they only play like the same 50 songs over and over again, and pretty much none of those songs could really be categorized as classic rock.
I'm 25 and I have said...."never mind you're too young for that" to a walgreen's cashier. Although I knew it was Jimi, I didn't know Dylan did it first.
LOL that's funny because I was flipping through the channels and turned to the movie at like that exact instant.
while it doesn't blow my mind, i will say it is a little surprising that the lyrics are the first autofill on google. not that i can think of anything else that starts with "there must" but still a little surprising.
it does seem odd that you haven't ran into Jimmy's version of "watchtower" in the past 4 years.....(or 10 years), but don't cut yourself short and blame it on youth or ignorance. It happens. It was only a few weeks ago that I finally figured out that Beck is saying "Soy un perdedor" in his song "loser", which directly translates to "I'm a loser"
