[Houston Chronicle] John Lopez to join Vandermeer on 610 morning show

Why didn't they give you the chance, Matt? I guess they must love the brouhahs you and Rich have.

I wish they put you and Wex back together. You both play off each other so well. Neither of you belongs with the other hosts. I can't stand when you and Rich start talking about things and you use serious arguments and Rich starts in with his "Yes, but..." and then proceeds to just spout off ridiculousness.

 

Cougar Matt was a douche when he called in, and now he is just an arrogant douche.

This is a great idea. They should put them in the midnight - 6am slot. Those guys are horrible.

I've already stopped listening to 610 in the afternoons, because of Rich Lord and now I'll stop in the mornings. The only way the program director will realize these guys blow is if you don't listen to their station not even for 5 minutes when these guys are on.

 

If you look at this thread, the very demographic the program manager should be directing his approach to, hates this guy.

But, there is always something to be said for for the "Glen Beck" marketing approach where you just own the 20% of the overall audience that are idiots.

That's a decent market share really.

It really is frustrating to listen to. Matt will give logical, emperical evidence to support his opinions and Rich always comes back with some generalized bull**** like "Well I don't think it's all so black and white" or "there are a lot of things you have to take into consideration" or some other phrase that you can't argue with because he's not really SAYING ANYTHING. It's like the guy owns the patent on weasel words and weasel phrases. Anytime Matt asks him a flat out, yes or no, a-b-or c type question he NEVER commits to anything because he knows he can't support it. I hate Rich so much. Maybe he does some of it just to play devil's advocate to make an argument, but I don't get that impression over the radio. I think he really is that stupid.

Sorry to hear you weren't given the opportunity to get in that morning slot, Matt. God knows you deserve whatever you want at that station considering you've stuck around as long as you have and worked as hard as you have. But stick with it...karma will work for you in the end.

PS. It wouldn't bother me in the slightest if you ended up at 1560...even though I imagine they probably pay less.

 

If Matt would use the Darth Vader mask technology to give him an actual radio voice, he would be golden. But no one is going to give the big bucks to a kid who sounds 15, no matter that he is one of top 5 best sports commentators in town.

It's one of the qualifications of the business; aural presence.

Getting John Lopez is just a bad bad move. Vandie and JL will have by far the worst show on the Radio.

Wex is awesome, MattJ is awesome, CP is awesome, LZ is awesome. Everyone else sux balls.

 

Does anybody else miss the good old days, pre-790 & 1560, when John, Lance & Charlie, were all still at 610? Even though I like 1560 (whenever I can pick up their sorry signal), I think that when the other stations started popping up and taking guys away from 610, that that was the turning point for sports radio talk in Houston going downhill. The new stations had to bring in guys who suck like Lopez, Davies, and Dukes (has to be in a 3-way tie with R. Lord, John Lopez for worst sports radio talk host imo), while 610 had to replace the talent who left with people like the current nighttime shift guys, Rob and Sean, who I'm not a big fan of. Anyway, not a lot I can do about it now except to wait for 790 to fold and see where Charlie goes. Would be pretty crazy if he went to 97.5 instead of 610 or 1560.

Oh and one other thing, Mattj I think you're awesome (love how you rep UH every time you can), but can you and Rick please stop bringing up political/religious topics? It's hard enough listening to the callers give their (most of the time crappy) sports take but then you guys have to goad them into calling in about God and the Constitution?! Switched to Sean & John but could barely hear them over the static so I just put in OB4CL2 (which is awesome btw). /rant

 

I dunno....I kinda thought I was on fire at the end, too. It was the summer (crappy baseball) months that I feel I 'cooled' a bit (or got worse, to use your terminology--LOL).

Did I mention I'm LOVING my new, more sanity-supportive schedule

 

They're temporary I believe. Wex was just filling in the mornings while they were looking for a replacement. Since they found a replacement, Wex should be back there in his normal, well now different, time by Tuesday?

 

Gonna have to find myself a new morning show.
