Why can't we take our history back from the Titans? I mean, its the history of the HOUSTON Oilers. I still can't believe Tennessee actually wore Oiler retros last week.
Its like our wife left us and now we have to watch Tennessee love her while we settle for a young easy replacement. And by easy I mean no defense.
Paul Tagliabue didn't allow Art Modell to take the naming rights, etc of the Browns to Baltimore bc they were one of the original AFL teams. But he didn't do the same for the Oilers. Hypocrisy at its finest.
first of all, the browns weren't an original afl team. more importantly, the city of cleveland threatened to sue modell for breaking his lease, and as part of the settlement, allowed cleveland to keep its name and history. additionally, people in baltimore, who had lost the colts, didn't really want to steal cleveland's hsitory and name. and the nfl *knew* it was going to place a new team in cleveland. no such effort was made by the city of houston because no one ever thought we'd get another team. its really apples and oranges.
Call me r****ded, but if the Texans changed their nickname to the Oilers, I would become a fan of Bob McNair's team.
Everyone likes to talk about the run & shoot with those 90s Oiler teams with Moon. But people forget to mention the talent on defense. Like, Ray Childress, Al Smith, Lamar Lathon (who became excellent in Carolina), Cris Dishman, Sean Jones, Marcus Robertson, and William Fuller.
Maybe, but to allow Bud to disallow any other team to be called the Oilers when he changed their name was completely slapping our city in the face. But hell? Who cares about Houston? Only about 20% of us are native, anyway...
Doesn't Bud Adams own the rights to that name/logo, etc? Honestly, it would've been great to keep the "Oilers" stuff here and let the Titans go
there's really no "maybe" about it - that's how it happened and why. i'm not defending bud adams *at all* - but the oilers were named for his dad. i don't think he killed the name to be vindictive (though, it probably didn't hurt) and i don't think he has to apologize for that decision. what kills me - and always will about ALL franchise moves - is that the sports leagues don't have in place a mechanism that "kills" the franchise once a team moves. the history, records, etc., of the houston oilers should have ended in 1996 and the tennessee team should have been treated as an expansion team (in terms of stats, records, history, etc. 0 exactly what they did to baltimore). not only does this not pervert history, but it forces incoming teams to adopt an image specific to their new home. no more utah jazz or indianpolis colts, etc. and frankly, i was happy for the fresh start. i think people are over-romanticizing the oilers. they were, while oilers, a poorly run, usually unsuccessful franchise. they certainly had a few, much-too-brief enjoyable stretches. but they also trotted out some of the worst teams in nfl history. has everyone conviently forgotten 1981-1986 (citing a stretch i actually remember)? they finished with a losing regular season record, a losing playoff record, never played in a super bowl, and won a mere (iirc) 5 division titles in 36 years. and then, the cherry on top: their owner moved the team. had the texans been successful, i don't think anyone would miss the oilers. but given that the texans seem to be, thus far, nothing more than the same old oilers in different colors, i can see why a lot of people are longing for the first team.
Whatever. Time to let it go, guys. Quit whining about the Oilers leaving. It's been over a decade now. I'm pretty sure San Diego isn't still whining about the Rockets leaving. And they never even got another team.
they had the clippers... unless you're not counting them as a legitimate nba franchise, which is justifiable.
I know, but they left too. And to a city that already HAD a team. The Houston Oilers are HISTORY. Earl Campbell isn't walking through that door. Time to move on.

Thanks for the clarification. If I'm not mistaken, I heard what I originally said from Rich Lord. Should have known to google it before I posted !
Who was the guy we had last name Brown. The Chronicle put out a poster of him, it read, "xxxx Brown Talk of the Town". Good times.
