Following FFB's and BJ's little online argument around Facebook and political statements, I would have a question myself to all you native speakers.

After the German election yesterday, a friend of mine posted a comment that he would never vote for party xy (which I support). Another (English) friend of his added a comment that Germany would basically go to hell if this party were to be in government. So I just added a comment "Go ... [name of head of party] go!".

The guy (some older guy whom I don't know) followed that up by sending me a private message saying:

'Death is God's way of telling you not to be such a wise guy.'

Now, I know this is a saying and he was just quoting the saying - however, it kind of came out of the blue and I don't even know the guy.

Would you have felt offended by that?

That's a saying? In German, I'm assuming. If someone wrote that to me in English, I would think it was a threat.

It's someone trying to be serious on facebook. Add to that you dont know the guy and its through a PM. Nothing could be less consequential.

Your poll left out the 3rd option:

Neither because doesn't even register on the radar as far as being something that I should be concerned about.

I guess that would be covered by the "No" option.

Words on the internet are not offensive unless you want them to be.

Some guy you don't know sends you a PM on a facebook comment? Where he jokes about death?

More creepy then offensive, but offensive none the less.

(and, since we're discussing German politics, I just want to state that I was very disappointed when I read the party platform of the "Pirate Party." Such a let down. No Aaaaarghhh for you :( ).

Sounds like a really stupid threat from a really immature man.

If you have any mutual friends with the guy maybe ask one of them what his deal is.

Probably meaningless, but it can't hurt to cover your bases.

    I would reply:

"The Death Star is the Empire's way of getting you to say, 'That's no moon.' "

You egged somebody on who was already in a heated state. PM'ing someone about death is creepy, and that's a really unimaginative slogan; but you created the context. Depending upon your cup size, you could write him back and actually extend an olive branch. You seem to want to make something out of this provoked comment, how about a friendship rather than a feud.
