And things just keep getting worse for Chicago. In all seriousness this really is a shame. Kid had a future and some amoebas with planks removed that. Schools should invest in more proactive forms of recreation to keep the appeal of gangs to a minimum.
A lot of the times it's not even as much as two neighborohoods feuding, but even the respective gangs of two neighboring high rise buildings of the same public housing complex. Mayor Daley really needs to spend less time getting the 2016 Olympics, and more time and effort preventing these kinds of acts from occuring. It's a deep rooted problem that needs to be approached on a large scale -- it's not something that will go away overnight.
Yep, they discussed the author's research briefly in Freakonomics. I highly recommend the full length book, really insightful. Basically, it's about a University of Chicago grad student living with/ learning about an inner city gang on the South Side of Chicago (University of Chicago is also on the South Side). Venkatesh basically lives in the projects with these gang leaders for nearly a decade and learns about their inner workings, the reason these gangs formed, their role in the community, etc.
Yeah I agree. Here in SC the main thing is different neighborhoods holding grudges. I never understand that logic. I hang around and know folks from both sides. It's lame to hold a grudge against someone strictly based off their neighborhood. Sadly that is the case in most places though.
I don't know the situation in SC, but the gang feuds here in Chicago have everything to do with the gangs wanting to control their "turf" in terms of drug sales. Supply and Demand.
Why are black communities so violent and dangerous? Blacks are undoubtedly victims of discrimination, but things like this perpetuate those negative stereotypes.
I'd like to spend 10 minutes in a room with the despicable human being who slammed the wooden plank into the young man's head. Without his "homeboys" by his side, or a weapon in his hand, he's nothing but a coward. I sincerely hope that justice is served, and scum like that is washed from this Earth.
What the hell. Where were the damn teachers/cops/adults? This took place right outside a high school and nobody came to help?
Wait until Rush Limbaugh gets a hold of this... "Welcome to Obama's America!" This stuff happens all the time. This one just happened to be caught on video.
This was black-on-black violence though. Rush would only bring it up if it was black-on-not black violence.
Right -- I'm not saying socio-economic status doesn't play a role in this, it obviously does. But so does race. This might rile people up around here, but the 1960s wasn't that long ago. We've made lots of progress over the past 40 years, no doubt, but when you visit certain neighborhoods (here in Chicago, for example), it's pretty obvious.
Yes. I don't imagine something like this breaking out in affluent black neighborhoods around Atlanta anytime soon.
