Audio Slave sold out ..... so did Disturbed and Pearl Jam. I can't believe Audio Slave and Pearl Jam are doing Target exclusives.... Nine Inch Nails sold out 10 years ago... Metallica has always been garbage
Audioslave sold out their previous bands if anything. Metallica was so good in the 80s and then so bleh.
How did NIN sell out!? Edit: Never mind, I just saw another thread where you said In-N-Out was overrated. It's obvious that you hate America.
Audioslave broke up, so you guys won't have to worry about hearing that mush anymore, but in my lifetime it would have to be Stained, I mean, they sold out after one album. From "Mudshovel" to "It's been awhile", wow.
what exactly does is mean to "sell out"? most bands have members quit or are made up of a piece from one band and some pieces from another. as far as super groups go, hellyeah (mudvayne + pantera) was a disappointment, but i wouldn't say they sold out. how about velvet revolver?
I think the OP is confusing “selling out” with aging. Most of the groups that were mentioned have band members that are in their late 30’s and early 40’s. They are not going to be playing the same style of music that they did when they were in their 20’s.
Metallica is the only band where people feel compelled to say "I like Metallica, BUT ONLY THEIR OLD STUFF." Why is Metallica the only band to get this treatment? When you say you like the Rolling Stones, why not point out that you aren't referring to their 90s and 00s stuff? Is Metallica the only band to have a prime? Doesn't every band that ever existed have a period where they made their best music and other albums that weren't as good?
Speaking for myself, Metallica went from pioneering, ground-breaking, crush-your-skull speed metal to a total joke. That is why I feel compelled to make the distinction between "new" Metallica and "old" Metallica.
I think this is an unfair assessment. People who Love music could be labeled sellouts cause they don't support the real artists. Whatever happened to bands like HUM. They make a great record and then go away. No support. Artists like Metallica however are victims of their own success....... They have been trying to replicate the black album for years but due to their pedigree people still buy their records, even though they have been crap for over 12 years.
I can get with this assessment. It's a fine line to walk between evolving, experimenting, and selling out. I agree with The Freak in regards to Metallica taking an unfair beating for "selling out". A keen ear will tell you that Metallica has definitely "evolved" more than they have sold out, but for some reason they seem to be one of the firstbands mentioned when it comes to selling out. Then you have bands like Deftones, who have been experimental since day one and have totally flopped on some "experiments" (Saturday Night Wrist) but are still considered revolutionary bands. what I am referring to, when I say "sell out" are bands/artist that literally change their genre and identity to accompany/generate massive record sales.
Kings of Leon...man, I wasn't a big fan or anything, but I remember loving the hell out of that Molly's Chamber song. Then with this current album, I saw them on some show and they all looked like the Jonas Brothers.
What does selling out mean to you guys though? I mean we can't really blame bands for letting their songs be used in commercials. Just think about all the songs that are illegally downloaded and the radio stations that play the same stuff again and again. To me, sellout means purposely tailoring your music to be more appealing to a wider audience, particularly the top 40 crowd. The best example I can think of is Sugar Ray: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_VL5LV9PVZ8&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_VL5LV9PVZ8&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kqr4ouQ3Uf8&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kqr4ouQ3Uf8&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Maybe The Barenaked Ladies: <div><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/x28w8q&related=0" width="480" height="332"><param name="movie" value="http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/x28w8q&related=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x28w8q_barenaked-ladies-the-old-apartment_music?embed=1"><img src="http://www.dailymotion.com/thumbnail/video/x28w8q" width="480" height="327" /></a></object><b><a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x28w8q_barenaked-ladies-the-old-apartment_music">Barenaked Ladies - The Old Apartment</a></b><br /><i>Uploaded by <a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/pope****er">pope****er</a>. - <a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/us/channel/music">Explore more music videos.</a></i></div> <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/pPo9ISQpzvM&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pPo9ISQpzvM&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>
You lose. http://www.nme.com/news/radiohead/47054 Radiohead open with 'Creep' at Reading Festival 2009 Radiohead shocked fans by opening with 'Creep' as they headlined the final night (August 30) of the 2009 Reading Festival. Taking to the event's Main Stage, frontman Thom Yorke casually wandered up to his mic, simply greeting the crowd with "Wassup!" - mimicking an old beer commerical - before launching into their 1992. The set later included recently download 'These Are My Twisted Words', which they also played at the Leeds Festival yesterday (August 29). Radiohead also played the likes of 'Just', 'Karma Police' and 'Idioteque', alongside several songs from last album 'In Rainbows', including 'Jigsaw Falling Into Place' and '15 Step'. Before playing 'Bodysnatchers', Yorke informed the audience that bassist Colin Greenwood was having technical difficulties. "Colin's bass pedal just went chuuk," he said, mimicking a guitar pedal blowing up. However, the band continued for the remainder of their set without problems, though Yorke kept the chat to a minimal level between songs. The band ended their set with a blistering version of their 1997 anthem 'Paranoid Android', followed by an effect-laden 'Everything In Its Right Place'. Radiohead played: 'Creep' 'The National Anthem' '15 Step' 'There There' 'All I Need' 'Nude' 'The Gloaming' '2+2=5' 'Climbing Up The Walls' 'Street Spirit (Fade Out)' 'Reckoner' 'Karma Police' 'Weird Fishes/Arpeggi' 'Just' 'Idioteque' 'Exit Music (For A Film)' 'Bodysnatchers' 'You And Whose Army?' 'Lucky' 'These Are My Twisted Words' 'Jigsaw Falling Into Place' 'Paranoid Android' 'Everything In Its Right Place'
kings of leon is a big one... their first two albums are pure magic. but the latest one makes me want to throw up.
