Cato and the #9 (using the 4.5), for Van Horn and the Nets second round pick.

#1. Score more points than the other team.

    I would not.

You're giving up our current, possibly improving starting center, a potential starting SF/PF and our middle class exception for a second rounder and a guy that is talented, but will eat up valuable cap space.

    No dice.

Van Horn averaged 19.2 points, 8.5 boards and a pair of assists last season -- hit 44.5% from the floor and 36.8% from three-point range.

Even with those numbers I'm not overly impressed with him ... he's a bit soft at times and not real strong defensively. Huge contact too. Personally, I'd rather get a young blue chipper .... but it's not an awful proposal you're throwing out there.

Ditto Clutch, I also think of Keith as a weak power forward.

Well, I would make that trade. Van Horn is still a player and can contribute to any team under the Right circumstances.

Cato showed little last year, and the 9th pick is good but movable.

Look at it this way, you get rid of Cato's contract. Plus you get a a quality guy to build around.

    Thus you have:

    c-Kenny Thomas/Pig Miller
    pf-Van Horn/Williams/Mounekee
    sf-Williams/Anderson
    sg-Anderson/Mobley
    pg-Francis/Mobley

All you need is a good rotation to start off to build around for a championship.

I would not do this deal. Keith Van Horn is just too soft to play the PF position and a little slow footed for the SF position. At the SF position, he can be a very tough cover on the offensive end of the floor with his size and ability to play inside and outside however he is too much of a defensive liability imho. This is a big part of the reason I think the Nets will go with Kenyon Martin; it takes a lot of softness out of their frontline with Martin at PF and Van Horn at SF, and Martin is capable of covering up for Van Horn getting burned with his quick help defense.

Why is everyone so eager to dump Cato after one season with the Rockets?

Yea, he is making roughly 6 mil/yr over the duration of this contract, but he is the only real center we have once Hakeem is retired. Cato has been busting balls since the Rockets season ended trying to improve his game and as CD said today on 610 "change his body" so that he can become a more effective player. How many players have you ever heard about doing 2-a-days immediately after the season ended? I agree he should have been doing this all along to make himself a better Rocket, but the man working hard to improve.

Kenny Thomas and Pig Miller are NOT going to hold down the fort with guys like Shaq, Robinson, and Mourning ruling the paint. Teams can not compete in this league when they play the center position by committee! KT and Pig would be abused on a nightly basis with that lineup!

Cato should not be traded without receiving a quality starting center.
