Say you went into a lunch room and there are tables with all white people and tables with all black people, would you be more likely to sit with your own race? If so does that make you a racist? I would think no because you don't necessarily dislike the other race, but likely feel more comfortable around people of the same race.

    Kind of a HS/college observation.

Or it may be that you feel more comfortable not being the "minority" in the group.

You are describing a racial preference, it is not necessarily hate for another race. I would assume that if you knew and liked the people of the other race you would be more likely to sit with them than total strangers of your own race.

I do believe there is something motivating racial preferences in friendships, dating, etc. but that's a separate topic.

It's not racist if you discriminate against everybody equally.

We make such a big deal about race in the US so we consider our prejudices more in terms of racism than classism, sexism, etc. I didn't vote because I think racism is an issue of your thought towards a group of people (whether you are in the majority or not) rather than words or actions which are just the final result of your thoughts.

As to why you might prefer to spend time with people of your own race, I don't think it has to be a question of racism. You might assume that you have more in common with them than with others. You would probably be wrong but if all you had to work with was skin color I guess I can understand the mistake. I'll admit that I have a preference for hanging out with people who I expect I have more in common with. I don't spend a great deal of time with people who are also mixed race (I just don't meet as many). I'm also a bit turned off by guys who look like they could be one of my brothers. Tiger Woods? Eeew!

On a related note, it is generally a disadvantage for minorities to spend their social time with other people of their race in certain settings like work (and possibly school as well but I haven't seen research on that). The problem is that when a person is seen spending time exclusively or primarily with a minority group of which they are a part, it is assumed that they are not very "mainstream" or that they have a natural preference for that group. A friend of mine who is a school teacher was telling me about how the Vice Principal was being passed up for the open Principal positioin because he always spent his time with the black teachers and the many white teachers felt that he would be too preferential towards them. In any case, it certainly encourages an "us vs. them" mentality.

I have yet to see evidence that Wright spent 20 years spewing rhetoric towards "others".

Looks like basso needs to go back to the research phase, and actually read the sermons in question. I hope that you would be able to ascertain the true meaning, but your comprehension skills leave a lot to be desired so we don't know.

That's OK, basso. You just keep plugging away.

Very true, a minority socializing with mostly other minorities of the same race is frowned upon but if you are to socialize with mainly the majority (not always white) then it is fine.

Does anyone think this is racist?

I used to never think about being the white guy. Notice it more now days. Could be because I grew up as the only white guy in my neighborhood, and am now generally surrounded by other white people.

I'm with you there..grew up in the same situation & never really thought about being the "only whhite guy" either. I never really thought in terms of Race until I was taught that I had to...in order to NOT be racist.

My race has been an issue for me before. I used to get teased in the 5th grade for being one of the only white kids in the school. I was also transferring from a really great education into a crappy one so I got teased for knowing the answers all the time.

Now my best friend is black, my closest female friend is Hispanic, and in my "circle" I'm the only white person. I've never considered my race among them, but it did prove to be awkward once when hanging out with my best friends group of friends from college who were all black. They were not comfortable around me at all.

    Define Racist?

Human Beings. Period. The idea that you can absolve yourself from racism through political correctness or understanding is the first mistake you can make. You can be rspectful of one another and still be racist which is how much people try to manage their own racism.

Also, politics itself is a way to be racist without sounding racist because you are just using political jargon to mask your racist point of view.

See that is kind of the thing.
If a white VP was spent more time with White Teachers
If the Black Teachers brought it up . . generally dismissed as THE RACE CARD
    and
It would not impede the VP's Career at all.

You know, I think the black teachers would have objected had the situation at that school been reversed. It might not stop the person from getting the job but it would create unnecessary tension amoung the staff. In my experience many minorities shrug it off (unhappily) as just what you can expect in a white world and let that sort of thing just add to bitterness.
A better solution would have been to encourage more racial mixing amoung the staff in the first place. My friend, who is mixed, said she tries to spend time with both groups. The school ended up hiring someone from the outside for the position.

I'm not sure this is entirely true but even if it is, I would think that being aware of the problem goes a long way towards changing your attitude and eventually your heart about it.

The only way to solve it is for everyone in the world to NOT have a point of view. If you have a point of view, you are excluding another point of view which is the basis of all racism.

If you have always lived in large cities like Houston, I'd wager you have never met a racist. It isnt just what they think about you, but how far they are willing to act on it.
