Hakeem is a fantastic ambassador for Islam. His integrity and respect for himself and others seals the deal as being one of the greatest players to ever lace up for a game. I will never get tired of hearing these kinds of stories about Hakeem. Playing games at such an extraordinary level without water - wow. Hakeem is a cut above many human beings, much less NBA players. Thanks for sharing this story.
I know this reply doesn't belong in this forum, but I just wanted to say that you said it beautifully.
lol. this sounded pretty odd. Les Alexander has always been willing to shell out for free agent acquisitions, from Scottie Pippen's $67 million contract to the signing of P.J. Ramos last week.
Not sure why some people are surprised. He did father an illegitimate child and was roundly problematic for the franchise before he became the leader that took us to NBA titles
bigtexxx, you flaming attention whoring idiot.. not gonna go further because you don't deserve the attention
u never saw his AMAZING games when he would never drink water during a game...........that was amazing when he would play 40+ mins and never drink... but during half time he would gargle water..
When I was a kid and Hakeem was at the pinnacle of his career, I would see Hakeem almost every day at the Masjid (Mosque) even for the dawn prayer sometimes. I still remember to this day how humble he was even though he was the MVP and one of the best players in the league. He is just a complete class act and a great representative for muslims. May God bless him. Great post. P.S. In the article it says how his God is Allah, in arabic Allah literally means God. Arabic christians, jews, muslims all refer to God as Allah, even in the arabic versions of their respective scriptures.
I respect Dream as a man and a basketball player, and clearly his dedication to the Islamic faith calmed him down as a man. It worked for him, no doubt. DD
I think a very small number of people realize how HARD is to fast and to some kind of physical activity, let alone NBA game. Hakeem is very humble man, incredible role model and public figure that deserves even more media attention as a basketball player, role model, person etc.
No need to knock Dream but he was hardly a saint, especially early in his career, all of what Texx said is true, if you choose to look at it that way. DD
Depending on how you read it, it's either negative comentary on Islam (no suprise a Muslim would do those things) or negative commentary on Hakeem early in his career (no surprise someone wouldn't realize he's Muslim, given his earlier behavior). I think he meant the latter.
Precisely. Here's the easy answer: Muslims have illegitimate children too! Big whoop. Hakeem learned his lesson after screwing up. SOME PEOPLE will never learn though. When I think about how I'd struggle through a friendly football game when fasting (and how it would be scheduled to be able to break my fast the minute the game is over), I realize how unbelievable Hakeem was. Hydration is key in sports - football experts said the other day than 1% less hydration can lead to upto 20% less muscular performance. This article is awesome and, IMO, his transformation from early career onwards is a testament to his great character. I only wish he was more vocal as there are a lot of youngsters whose basketball careers can be positively impacted by Hakeem's story.
I am muslim too and Hakeem is a big role model to many people...he shows his class even though he is rich, he never forgot about his religion and thanking God for the blessing on him FYI, i don't think Hedo or even Shaq (whatever rumors) are muslim
Even though Turkey is 98% muslim, the entire country is pretty much secular. To this day, the hijab is banned in public buildings.
Hedo is a muslim, but I know that he doesn't fast like Hakeem. Each to his own. I like Hedo, and it has nothing to do with his religious beliefs.
wow I didn't even know Hedo was Muslim until I read this article. Just wondering, how do you know that he doesn't fast?
