Saying McGrady is better than a prime Scottie Pippen is very debateable...

As long as he slashes to the basket and throws down some nasty dunks over people's heads like he did in NY and continues to play solid D and knock down open 3s like he did in LA, I will be a happy camper! :D

We don't want a superstar. We want a solid player with hopes of being a superstar. :p

But what if he is able to take us out of the first round?

    What would that mean?

What if he steps up on Brandon Roy instead of letting him hit an open 3 for the game winner?

    What would that mean?

I do watch. He shoots spot up jumpers (and shot them well later in the season and great in the playoffs). He didn't slash or even handle the ball much.

I know a lot of you see how athletic he is and pretend that means he is a slasher with great handles but that is not the reality. He is an athletic defender who is most effective on offense catching and shooting 3 pointers. At least in the playoffs he was. Before that, he wasn't a very effective offensive player doing anything other than finishing at the rim every now and again.

Tmac in his prime was MUCH better than Pippen offensively.

Pippen in his prime was MUCH better than Tmac defensively.

The only similarity between the 2 is length, athleticism, ball handling ability, finishing above the rim, and transition 3 pointers.

Toronto Tmac was comparable to Pippen defensively

Prime Pippen is comparable to 2008 Tmac offensively

Tmac had much more skills on offense (triple threat, elbow post up, pick n' roll, passing, crossover)

Pippen had much better defensive techniques and instincts.

These 2 combined would physically be an almost perfect basketball player.

I've always thought Ariza's potential to be Prince. Great defender with length who eventually developed a solid all around offensive game. Anyway, the T-Mac comparison is just stupid. Unless he means the Toronto T-Mac. That's about Ariza's offensive ceiling.

Ariza was brought in to replace Shane on the court. Maybe not in the locker room, but on the court. If Shane was three years younger, I don't think Ariza would be a Rocket.

Nice post. It has a healthy dose of reality unlike the article that this thread is based on. I don't know if I agree with the premise that we are emulating the Spurs but there are some merits to your ideas. The problem though is that Trevor is as solid a defender as he is a scorer and as such he will not be a player to come in and be ying to battier's.... ahem yang. I think Trevor is a starting wing for the Rockets for the next 4-5 years min. his game is solid on both ends of the floor and he seems to be a solid professional.

This article is really stupid. DIME seems to allow to just let its writers throw stuff up there sometimes.

Here are some pretty basic numbers

Miles & McGrady were top picks out of high school.

Miles was 20 and in his 3rd year when he left the clippers

Tmac was in his 4th year and 21 when he left the Raptors

Trevor Ariza (an out of college second rounder) is going into his sixth year and fourth team and is 24.

The difference in potential or unknown ability in a 3rd year high school pick and a sixth year, 3 team, veteran is HUGE.

p.s. My major pet peeve in sports comparisons is when people claim that someone will be one of two polar opposites. How often does this happen? It's like saying Mark Sanchez will be Ryan Leaf or Tom Brady. Why? Isn't it 100 times more likely he is somewhere in between.

I would say it is almost impossible that Ariza is as bad as Darius Miles or as good as T-Mac.

I don't care to what others say about Ariza!

Bottomline is that WE GOT ARIZA FOR FREE! through a relief fund given by the NBA!

    nuff' said.

we're talking about Trevor Ariza right? I love my rockets and I'm a homer, but I let's get real

He's will never be a Scottie Pippen or McGrady. Flame me, but I'd rather have Pippen in his prime over McGrady. Let's not get into a the Jordan Pippen debate....just my preference.
