According to Chinese NT coach :
Wang's staying in USA, contrary to his own claim, was not approved by CBA. They are now still demanding Wang back to China to join the NT before their training in US begins. They need time to fit him as a PF. Otherwise, says the coach:"Wang's return to NT has to be re-evaluated by CBA and Bayi rockets."

My conjecture was right all along. Wang's resistence pissed somebody (NT coach), but CBA kept the newsfrom public to allow deals with Rockets to go more smoothly. They would have to have some more dramatic measures with Yao if that news was in public. This also proved Rockets has very good relationship/understanding with CBA.

I am not a Wang ZhiZhi fan. Imagine if he would have kept Ming from being drafted. I bet Yao wouldn't have appreciated that very much.

Actually I think he did try to help Ming. It's no coincidence that he broke silence to CHinese and US media claiming that he didn't violate NT rule right before the draft.

I think the Chinese feel that Wang dishonored them by refusing to return for practice with the NT team.

I am torn on this issue due to the fact , I really don't have the answer whether Wang should defect or not.

I believe in honor, integrity, and honesty. I know that this is the greatest country in the world but if a person has commitments, they should meet them or it is a reflection of your integrity.

Would Wang be better off staying in the US to practice his game...maybe

Should Wang have returned to China to practice with the NT...the honorable thing would have been to go home when asked.

Does Wang have the right to refuse to return..yes

Whether Wang wants to return or not is entirely up to him. Ming has pledged his loyalty to China and I respect him even more for that.

Defection is such a nasty word. In some cases, it is the only way to freedom.

I do not know what the cultural climate is in China but from what I have read and seen recently through the media and whatnot, things are different. The Chinese may be communists but they are moving toward capitalism everyday. I know the communist government has softened its stance in some political arenas. They are still control freaks but hell so is our govt..:)

If Wang wants to stay in the US, thats between Him and China.

I am proud to have some an honorable person to play for this team. Usually it is quality over quantity. Well with Ming , we got both.

good grief michecon, that entire sentence is a conjecture.
They "kept news secret" to help Rockets. That is the definintion of X-file conjecture. Is this about Wang or Yao, because if it is about Wang, rockHEAD is right, wrong forum. Get this Wang stuff out of here.

If it is a continued conjecture about a Yao snag, your quotes show nothing about Yao, so they remain a conjecture. I don't see it.

Facts is: you are dismissing the impact of our need for assurances. Letters and promises went both ways. I could easily say that the letter we got was the snag and (in your words) "the Rockets kept the news from public to allow deals with CBA to go more smoothly." Fact is: on Monday, our Player Personnel Direct (head scout) was quoted as saying we needed assurances....we always made those demands. Always. And we didn't get them until the exchange of letters.

Please move on until you find something about Yao negotiations, because we have our explanation of the negotiations in our newspapers from our Coach, our Player Personnel Director, our GM, and our Legal Counsel...

Each one of these guys as well as Yao and Yao's agenst always said he could play in the Asian Games, but each one always said the Rockets needed assurances, too. Further, fwang said in a translation that "the CBA has until Friday to respond to the NBA's request of Yao's status." I read that as we were waiting on our letter from them concerning Nov-June. Your conjecture says nothing about the letter of assurances the CBA sent the Rockets to guarantee the NT won't recall Yao from Nov through June...which means he can't play in the East Asian Games like Wang and Yao did in May, 2001.

Plus, it would really be nice if you gave us a quoted translation and not your paraphrases, as you are definitely trying hard to prove yourself right about your conjectures. Give us the translations please, because the English version of Sina has nothing about this.

Michecon, thanks for the news on Wang. I had figured as much. As it relates to Yao, though, you needn't sweat it, because the CBA and Sharks have agreed to let him come to Houston and Houston has picked him. The drama is over with and Yao is a Rocket.

Dennis2112, it's not like Wang was a slave working in the Bayi salt mines. Don't let Cold War caricatures of China unduly prejudice you toward the country.

I think Wang has honor, integrity, and honesty. Otherwise, he has defected years ago. When he was 18, he got a chance to play for an Amrican college team but was denied by Bayi Rockets. After he was drafted by Dallas, he was denied for another two years. Now, it is a critical time for him to get a new contract, the basketball officials in China want him back again. If he follow the orders, he will not get a good contract and will go back to China every summer for years to come. As a result, his NBA career will be ruined.

Wang has a lot of talent but he didn't improve much after reaching 18 years old because he was already the best in China by then. Six years later today, He doesn't want that to happen again. I don't think he plans to defect. Instead, he wants to negotiate with the officials so that he can play the summer league and later play for the national team. This is a reasonable request.

China is quite open and free today contrary to many people's impressions. However, there are still some officials who were used to the old system enjoy controlling other people's lives. Their mentality is like "Since my life sucks, I will use my power to make your life suffer too." When somebody is in these people's hands, he/she just cannot have any interity and dignity.

I believed If anyone can make his/her life better by contributing to the society (no matter it is U.S. or China) instead of cheating or bull ****ting like the politicians do in the U.S. and China, that is honor, integrity, and honesty.

You are quite correct. I never meant to imply that Wang was dishonorable. I was talking more about what some of those controlling people think.

I had no idea of some of the hoops and hardships that were placed on him. It is ashame that China has done all those things to Wang. I applaud him in his efforts to better his game and career. Lord knows that has been cheated out of it so far. Whats good for one may not be good for another. Wang's journey was through the military and they have additional restrictions on Wang that Ming does not have on him.

I wish Wang the best of luck .............

Dennis2112,

Sorry I didn't read your post carefully. We actually totally agree with each other.

Switch to another topic, I think Wang's life in NBA will be easier than that of Ming's. Wang has the speed (12'4 for 100m) even though he is not quick but will improve with strength training. He also got the jumping ability with a reach of 12'3. He was a second round pick and he does not talk much, so the pressure is low. Ming is the No. 1 pick, there will be a lot of pressure on him. He will also get a lot of hostility from the opponents because he talks a lot. He'd better back it up with his play. Ming got weakness, he is not as fast as Wang and cannot jump very high. Fortunately, he is freaking tall and has a high basketball IQ.

I wish both of them good luck.

I love Wang Zhi Zhi...For all his defensive shortcomings, he really is a good offensive player. Nellie knows it, thast why Wang gets any playing time on a loaded Dallas Team.

Plus he showed that by staying in the US for the sumemr he knows and understands that he needs improvement, and knows how...

OR
Maybe he met a cute girl in L.A.

Learn read beyound headline please:) Seriously it has everything to do with Rockets. It shows Rockets are a decent enough org to concince CBA not to worry about this. etc, etc.

And Heyp, I don't understand what your ranting about. Still can't quite get over your theory about asia games hur? All I am saying is that, CBA doesn't want to put itself in a awkward position by revealing this news. It doesn't help for their image when they know they can get no more than an empty promise from Rockets, and this news would have shown Chinese people how empty it was. Why do you think they let this out right after the draft? I believe my conjecture is based on what I know about these people. And wtf says I can't conjecture a bit anyway.

I don't think that is it at all. I think he is making his NBA career a priority over representing his country in international play. Practicing in the States may help him get minutes for the Mavs, but it won't help him learn the offensive sets and defensive rotations of the Chinese National Team. In this way, he is betraying his country.

I think Yao is going to have the same difficulty in serving two masters. Should he practice things that will make him better in the Olympics or in the NBA? The Chinese are hoping they will be much the same, but, where they diverge, which way will he go?

silly game telling other people they are ranting just because they don't agree with you. Just make your point and quit trying to claim people are ranting as a cheap means to make you sound like the rational one. LAME!!!

"Theory"

First off, we have new information what the contents of the agreements are...obviously you do not read Houston papers...the mutual assurances sent back and forth were about the Asian Games and NBA Season which would overlap the East Asian Games.

Second, Are you saying I can't get over my "conjecture?" ummmm, who started the thread about who's conjecture being right?

michecon, you have a very odd way of making your point. You said your "conjecture was right" which in my language means you believe it to be true and no longer a conjecture. So, who can't get over their conjecture.

You believe the stories out of China; I believe what the Rockets officials said. We didn't have our assurances. That was the snag. That's a conjecture...but you need to get over you idea that your "conjecture is right."

Hey, I guarantee you that I know the Rockets way of doing things much better than you know the way the CBA officials do things, given that our mgmt has a track record that pre-dates the CBA. I trust the official statements of Rockets officials about needed assurances that they haven't go yet regarding Nov-June games more than your "hidden secrets" about extra practice time for the Olympics.

Again, explain to me what their demand was????

We were demanding no recall between Nov-June...that is a fact, and that is outside of FIBA rules...what was the CBA demanding. Can you even answer that? Why should I believe your version of events just because you know Chinese ways, especially when you are talking of supposed "secrets not revealed."

I am talking about news of what the letters contained. You appear to have ulterior motives to villify the CBA.

Boy, I had a friend when I was in third grade. He likes to argue and always wants to get the last word. You said too much things I have never said or suggested in my original post.

Facts: 1)Wang's story is not what he was saying.
2)CBA reveals this only one day after Houston drafts Yao.
Conjecture: 1) CBA intentionally held back, or "failed to clarify" this. 2) This has something to do with the willingness of CBA to deal with Rockets.
3) Arguing with somebody over something in length he does not even said just because he previous did not support one's theory/conjecture is probably ranting.

[edit] I see, Somehow you take my small claim of victory in conjecture as argument against your earlier post. Aih.

That's all
