Schaub hurt already? - Rocket River http://blogs.chron.com/sportsjustice/archives/2009/09/if_schaub_was_h.html If Schaub was hurt, why was he playing? Afterwards, Gary Kubiak said what everyone at Reliant Stadium could see. Matt Schaub isn't close to being healthy. I understand why he played anyway. He's the No. 1 quarterback, and if he can do, he's going to be out there. But I don't understand why coaches play guys when they're clearly limited. Is Matt Schaub that much better than Rex Grossman? On the other hand, as Kubiak said, if the Texans had run the ball, if they hadn't made so many mistakes, Schaub would have had a chance. He got knocked down three times in the first quarter, and thanks to an assortment of missed assignments, dropped balls, penalties and no running game, he never had a chance. Once the Jets got in front and Rex Ryan turned his blitzers loose, it was over. ''He wasn't himself,'' Kubiak said of Schaub. ''I thought you all saw that. I think he could function and do the things he needed to do to win a game if we could have helped him. To get behind and have him sit there and throw against that defense and the pressures and things they bring when you get behind, that was probably very unfair to him. He was healthy enough to win at quarterback, but the way we played the game gave him no chance to do that.'' Posted by Richard at September 13, 2009 05:29 PM
Was he worth a 6 year/$48 million contract? I sure as hell don't think so. While he was an efficient back-up in ATL, he's proven to be a mediocre starting NFL quarterback and he's extremely injury prone. What happens if he fails to stay healthy and consistently produce over a full season yet again? Does Kubiak stand by the investment, or look elsewhere (free agency, trade, draft)?
I can't really throw all the blame on Schaub. The line absolutely stunk today. They pretty much opened the door and allowed blitzers to pummel Matt. I think it also tells the story of just how valuable Kevin Walter is.
The O-line was clearly the biggest problem on the field, offensively. The coaching didn't make any effective adjustments to help the situation. Despite those factors, Schaub seems to get rattled easily. He made his share of bad plays independent of the O-line and coaching failures. Truthfully, it's hard to find anything to really be happy about. Almost every facet of this organization looked like a failure today.
There were times when Matt had some time to throw but either held on to the ball too long or made a inaccurate pass. Matt does not have a big arm or any above average physical attributes. His biggest asset is his accuracy wich was clearly absent today. On the defensive side I tought Bush became too predictable with his blitz packages, once this happened they made the adjustment to run quick screens and dumps offs and they killed us with that. One thing I did like was Cushing being involved in a lot of tackles and how physical he is. But that was about it as far as good things to take from this game.
Dude on Inside the Game is pointing at Schaub's lack of mobility and inability to get out of the pocket as a major problem. He's questioning why they would play Schaub against this kind of defense if he wasn't healthy.
wow Kubes...way to make excuses, look like an idiot, and throw yourself under the bus. Also, why was Schaub still in the game at the 7 minute mark, if you thought he wasn't fit to even play the game to begin with? Bye Bye Kubes pack your bags, your *hitty playbook, and excuses. QB coach for Elway? LOL Elway...Elway needing a QB coach..
Honestly, I think people are looking for an excuse. I watched Schaub on the field, and watched him walking around after the game -- and I didn't notice a limp at all. The Texans didn't roll him out of the pocket because, quite frankly, they never held the rush long enough to do that -- from either side. Also, you inherently run fewer rollouts against a 3-4 scheme. Schaub isn't a mobile QB. He never has been. His ankle is fine. Now, if you ask the Texans with a leading question, sure they'll give Schaub the out of saying he was "playing hurt" -- because it's about the only plausible excuse that could easily be remedied. But I watched him closely on and off the field, we talked to him, and imo, I didn't see a thing wrong. It's like people forgot he was always a slow QB. Unfortunately, it wasn't the injury -- we just got annihilated up front, imo -- but that's not a sexy enough story for a lot of reporters.
I definitely agree that the O-line was the biggest problem along with the coaches and their lack of preparation and adjustments. I still think Schaub looked bad on those rare occasions when he did have time. He looked rattled and was making poor, inaccurate throws off his back foot even in those situations. Oh well... let's see how things look over the next couple of weeks. One thing is for sure: This was a total team failure, starting with the coaches.
I was feeling like I was watching some David Carr syndrome after he got hit the few times in the first.
Pretty funny that the coaches knew Schaub couldn't execute a playaction pass with his ankle so their alternate gameplan was to have him attempt 7 step drops; what wasn't funny was that he usually had at least one green jersey back there with him when he planted his foot on the fifth step o his seven step drop. What is completely unforgivable is never trying a three step drop.
I hope we turn this puppy around. If not , we need to go after an experienced coach to lead this team.
Jenkins in the middle and the overload to one side was killing today. Once the nt is working inside and you have to turn protections, it will open the gate for other bad stuff. The defense cant let a rookie gproduce that well on 3rd downs and expect to win. They pressured, but they didn't take away the hot read and that where they were killed.
According to our resident know-it-all, Schaub is not really injuried and these rumors are being started by the voices in MY head. See following post. You can all relax, Schaub is fine and 100% healthy http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=4752360&postcount=903
Lol at all the knee jerk reactions...gimme a break...talking about whether he is worth the contract. Everyone has a bad game, specially when youre coaching staff got their a$$es handed to them. Look at Cutler today...was he worth it? 17/36 and 4 interceptions? Jake Delhomme...4 INTs...wtf, how is he on a roster? Kurt Warner against San Francisco...is he worth it? How could a superbowl team lose at home against the Niners???? Come on people...we got totally outcoached today. If we had anything to counter the Jets defensive attack, it would have helped in making Schaub look better. Instead, the Texans made ZERO adjustments and just kept bending over repeatedly to the point where they were enjoying it at the end and actually asking for reach arounds. Its on the coaches first. Then the blame trickles down.
The offensive line wasn't too good?! Wow, that is a shocker! How long has it been since they were good? Like, NEVER! Every draft I bring this up. What happens? NADA! Ironically, they have drafted like a million DL's and they aren't good either. And this team has 25 VP's?! For what? Fire them and bring in some coaches and players. It's been eight years people, the "Go Texans" baloney is wearing a little thin.
