After all, earlier in the day GM Carroll Dawson had already proclaimed the Rockets would indeed be selecting Yao first overall. The real drama at Rockets draft headquarters on draft night concerned the No. 15 pick, which the Rockets had targeted all along to use on Slovenia's Bostjan Nachbar. However, after an impressive workout the weekend before the draft, Houston had fears Nachbar may not be available at No. 15. After a couple of close calls with Washington at the No. 11 spot and the Clippers at No. 12, the Rockets staff had one more concern - Indiana at No. 14. When NBA Commissioner David Stern announced the Pacers' selection of Fred Jones, Rockets Head Coach Rudy Tomjanovich, Dawson and the remainder of the coaching staff began to celebrate as they realized Nachbar was on his way to Houston. Rockets.com was on hand in the Rockets war room during draft night to bring you the following exclusive video highlight clips. See the Rockets staff's celebration of selecting Yao, Tomjanovich's and Dawson's comments on the draft, the sweating out of Indiana's pick, and more!
Check out the one that says, "Rockets Get Their Man" about Nachbar. Remember that TNT female announcer is talking about how Rudy has always wanted a SF "like the 80s when guys like Bird and Dr J" were dominant, and they "want to get back to that." She says how we will use this pick on a SF and our 2 favorites are still on the board, Quintel Wood and Nachbar. Keith Jones laughs at the guy next to him, and I think he said "she said Woods." Someone else said "Woods??" Makes you think they never would have taken Woods. Guy can't shoot, another Larry Hughes in the making.
I agree totally heypartner Woods is one of those guys that has alot of draft hype but won't turn out as expected. The guy fell dramatically for a reason. It obviously doesn't help him going to the JailBlazers either.
I was just a little skeptical that she said Woods and Nachbar were their top two choices. What about Dunleavy and Butler? I don't buy it.
OT, I'd agree, but listen to what she said. She said that the Rockets had "6 SFs on their list, and the top 2 still remain." She just was wrong, or goofed on what she wanted to say.
I think the list of 6 that she was talking about is: 1. Mike Dunleavy 2. Caron Butler 3. Jared Jefferies 4. Amare Stoudamire (even though he was not a SF) 5. Bosjan Nachbar 6. Qyntel Woods of the 6, 2 were still available in Nachbar & Woods.
The top 2 on the Rockets list did remain. Nachbar and Woods. But we all know that Woods wasn't even in the running.
Personally, I think Nachbar has a chance to be just as good if not better than Dunleavy or Butler. As far as taking Jefferies over Nachbar, let's just say I'm happy he was drafted by the Wizards.
