If Ariza got 6 mil how much should scola get? I think Scola is much better than ariza so maybe 8 mil?
Scola is in David Lee territory. He SHOULD get more than the MLE, but he's not good enough to have people throw money at him freely, especially at his age. If the Rockets don't renounce his rights to go after a big FA, I think he can get 8 mil from us or in SnT. Otherwise, he might have to settle for the full MLE.
Not actually true with the injuries to Yao and TMac this year expect his numbers to inflate I expect to be able to get 8 million if he goes on the open markert at the end of the season.
I think 5M for 5 years, 5th yr a team option, would do it. What matters is the guaranteed money. This would be double.
Armchair GMs, UNITE! Scola will not average less than 8 million per year on his next contract. He's already playing for less than half his worth.
The key number here is $6.77M. That is the amount of Scola's "cap hold", which is how much he'll count against the Rockets' salary cap next summer until either he is re-signed or his rights are renounced. If the Rockets think (and, more importantly, if they can convince Scola and his agent) that Scola is worth an amount less than $6.77M, then it would behoove the Rockets to quickly re-sign Luis once the July moratorium is lifted. However, if either party views Scola's market value as $7M+, then negotiations will be protracted and painful (well, at least for Scola). Remember, Scola is a RESTRICTED free agent next year, so his market value will be greatly chilled, especially if other teams truly believe that the Rockets will match any offer sheet. Take a look at David Lee and Ramon Sessions as two good examples of this effect. Both are much younger than Scola, and most people viewed their market value fairly high. If you would have polled even NBA GMs back in January that Ramon Sessions would have to settle for a four-year, $16M deal with a team option on Year 4, most would have said that was a bargain basement price for him. Luis Scola, as a 30-year-old restricted free agent, probably won't command his full market value had he been unrestricted or only 27 years old. Morey and the Rockets' front office know this and will use it to their advantage, even if it means that negotiations get acrimonious on occasion. If I had to guess, gun to my head, I'd say Scola gets somewhere between the MLE amount and $7M per season for about four years.
Making him one hell of a valued signing. Scola, unlike many, has been nothing but a joy to have in a Rockets uniform.
I think the myth of restricted free agency is that players don't get what they're worth or their "market value". It seems more like players get exactly what they're worth. Unrestricted free agents usually get overpaid. When a team has a restricted free agent they don't have to overpay for fear of losing the player so they can just wait for the market to determine his value and match it. In Scola's case he won't be getting underpaid. The rockets will just be waiting till the market determines what he's worth. I think he'll get Artest like offers, 5 years full MLE or 3 years 8M.
I think this is going to be very close to what Scola is going to get. Just look at the contract that Lamar Odom got... Not soo much of a difference. At least Lamar Odom got Khloe Kardashin as well. hehe I believe the market is still going to be down next year. I feel that the owners days of giving out crazy money is over with. I truly believe the NBA is going to change in general when it comes to money. It's already started this year.
But, his free agency is coming in the bonanza year. There are a lot of teams clearing cap space for big name free agents, and some of them are going to strike out. Once the big guys are off the board, will a team with money still in its pocket offer Scola significantly more than the MLE (after his banner year being the primary option in the low-post)? The Rockets also want a big free agent, so they may be constrained in matching offers for Scola. I don't think the restriction the Rockets have on him will be especially strong until and unless we strike out on our own big FA targets. A smart team that has money but knows it's not likely to get a tier 1 player would offer Scola a nice contract before the Rockets can clarify their own FA situation.
Exactly. "Well, we didn't get Bosh, but we can get Scola and maybe another player with our cap space." Luis will get about $8 mil per year for 3 or maybe 4 years, maybe slightly less but not much.
As i said before, this year´s free agency is no example, very few teams had cap space this year, and those who have made stupid trades (Memphis) or saved the money. 2010 will be a much more different scenario, with various teams able to offer over 10 million to any FA. I would say Scola can get a Millsap type of offer.
