Great strike from Clark and came from a great buildup. Let's go USA and get the three points.

Trinidad has really made Howard work for his flight home.

Not CONCACAF related, but I can't ****ing believe how low Argentina has fallen. They need a miracle now to qualify.

    hmmmm. Just got interesting.

El Salvador just scored on Costa Rica. Mexico has the lead. It's getting crowded.

Just finished watching it. What a great strike by Ricardo to get the 3 points.

Overall, I'm disappointed in the play. Bradley has got to know what Dempsey is showing up and make a decision on him sooner. He was absolutely pathetic and shouldn't have made it past the 50th minute. Tim Howard again proved why he's one of the best in the world. Save after save...especially on the free kick in the first half. I know Clark and M Bradley have played a lot together in the middle, but it creates this vacuum of creativity moving the ball forward. Donovan is forced to play more central which leaves the left back all alone. If that back is going to be Bornstein, better teams will exploit that over and over again.

I'm happy to be top of the group. A win at Honduras clinches the spot for 2010.

El Salvador beating Mexico @ Azteca Stadium would be awesome.

Not reaaly, they are currently fifth place and can still face off against a concaf team for a plAce in world cup. They are only one point behind Ecuador and can easily make in 4th.

Having watched soccer for 5 or so years but now closely following the road to WC, how close can we expect this team to be the team we bring to South Africa? Anyone on the bubble (I thought commentators mentioned Rico)? Who is a shoe-in (Donovan, Howard)? And is there anyone injured that we're missing?

    IMO...

    Shoe-in's
    Tim Howard
    Landon Donovan
    Oguchi Onyewu
    Carlos Bocanegra
    Michael Bradley
    Clint Dempsey
    Jozy Altidore

    Likely
    Charlie Davies
    Benny Feilhaber
    Johnathan Spector
    Jay DeMerit
    Brian Ching
    Rico Clarke
    Brad Guzan
    Steve Cherundolo

    Bubble
    Stuart Holden
    Jose Francisco Torres
    Johnathan Bornstein
    Frankie Hejduk
    Sasha Kljestan
    Chad Marshall

Others to consider...Maurice Edu, Clarence Goodson, Kyle Beckerman, Kenny Cooper, Connor Casey (though I have no idea why), Freddie Adu

There might be some I'm forgetting (a 3rd keeper for instance). Clarke going to Serie A is very good for him if he gets playing time. You could really see Onyewu's rust last night, not having played in a meaningful game in over a month. Most importantly, they need to find a competent and consistent left back. I can't stand the thought of Bornstein playing in the World Cup. He will get eaten alive. We'll see what's in Bradley's mind early in 2010 when the friendlies start up.

I agree with your shoe-ins, but I believe Davies and Clarke are sure 2010 players. Wow... I thought you'd have Freddy Adu in your list... I thought he was the next US phenom... what happened?

That was Clarke's first score and it came at the right time. I am proud to call him a Dynamo. In regards to the game, the ref stole that penalty kick from the U.S. in the first few minutes on that slide save to the corner by the Trinidad defender. I thought it was a sure foul there. Even though Trinidad had some sure shots and Howard saved them, it was tighter than the way the score ended up. Aren't you glad I was wrong about the score? :D

El Salvador. What can I say...? I expected you to beat the Ticos fair and square... I know they're going down and you should continue to fight. I don't know about beating Mexico at Azteca though... you think we might throw the game so you can go? I don't think so. Good luck, though. You need at least 4 points to tie CRC and for them to lose. Tough chances await you.

I am satisfied [for México] to come out with a win, but this is not how it's supposed to be. There will always be an argument as to how we can score. We have good attackers and passers and enough technical skills to get it done... but we shouldn't wait until the referee calls a foul for a penalty. Granted, Valladares had some awesome stops to take goals away from Blanco and Sabah in the first half, and Ochoa did the same to save what otherwise would have given Honduras a go ahead score in the second half. Noticing how he kept the ball away from the Honduran team when the score was secure shows the reason why he was needed. Up front, Gio did his job and got through to the penalty area. I believe that was a good call. Blanco's skill and experience, again, are key to this team. I would have liked to see Nery's skill one-on-one with Honduras this time... I think he would have scored easily.

See, the stand-back-and-wait-to-counterattack trick has been overplayed. I believe we have finally figured out how to defend a sure counter with the current midfielders and the defenders who don't give up to the first attack. Costly and Guevara tried it with no success. You won't beat anyone in the World Cup with that style of play, and it makes it boring. Do you win games? Maybe. Do you get criticized for the cowardly ways you play and would people start hating you for it? Yes. Ask Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda.

Here are Honduras' options: beat the U.S. and let Mexico sit alone up on top of the group, or lose to U.S. and go play the CONMEBOL fourth place. It's plain and simple. With El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago there to fight for 4th and spoilers respectively, Mexico will not have much trouble having Franco and Vela back. Heck, we might even let Blanco take a break  .

They will probably get the fourth spot and qualify directly. But even if they finish 5th they still got a shot against a CONCACAF team. So they will probably qualify.

They did fall pretty far. I wonder how long they will accept Maradona.

That was actually Clark's 2nd national team goal (first was against Paraguay in the 07 Copa America). And that was a clear hand ball in the box that wasn't called.

Unless Freddy gets serious playing time with Belenenses, he'll be out of this cycle. Don't forget that he's still only 20.

I really get worried watching the US play. This is what I get lately while watching this team...

Some players in the midfield look lost...I wish we could have guys like Holden and Torres get more playing time because I feel like they will have better control with the ball moving forward.

We can't seem to dominate lately. We haven't looked like the better team in the last 2 matches. We've been extremely lucky...Tim Howard is saving this team right now imo. it's not until the US scores that they finally gain some swagger and look confident on the ball. I wish they could do that the entire game because I'm not confident that this team will be able to win games with the score tied late in the 2nd half.

I really don't like Bob Bradley as coach...it seems like he would rather hold on to a 1-0 victory rather than earn some insurance by going up 2-0.

Jozy seems lazy to me at times...I feel like he's capable of playing at a higher lever but doesn't always do it...and Dempsey just never really has an impact on the game when he's playing mid, he needs to be up top to be effective.

I Just don't feel confident in this team right now...we may be up top right now...but I just don't like what I see right now. Now I'm not saying I'm right, because I'm still trying to fully understand soccer...never really started caring until 2006...so if I make no sense...school me please.

Julio-R-, yeah... let's talk about something... isn't it more fun to see an attacking, well-skilled game than a loose-ball free-for-all game like the one played at Port-Au-Spain last night? I will try to argue with you and say that maybe it hasn't been since the last two games, but since the last 5 games (at Costa Rica).

Also, why won't they give Adu a chance and call him? He seems to be even more fun to watch than the ones who currently play loosey-goosey with Donovan. If he doesn't get enough playing time with his own team, why not go back to MLS and start for someone in need? How do you explain FRANCO in Mexico not playing in a club team but getting to even start for the team, and Omar Bravo not being in a club and still getting a call for these first few games  ? If you don't want to give up a spot, I can understand... what happened to him?

Also, I meant in QUALIFIERS for Clark. I heard Schwartz say this last night and failed to add this. To help your country in advancing to the World Cup is more important, I think, than just scoring in friendlies.

    Here is the standings table after this round:<table class="wikitable" style="text-align: center; font-size: 90%;"><tbody><tr><th width="165"><div style="text-align: center; position: relative; white-space: nowrap;">Team</div></th><th width="25"><span style="border-bottom: 1px dotted; cursor: help;" title="Played">Pld</span></th><th width="25"><span style="border-bottom: 1px dotted; cursor: help;" title="Won">W</span></th><th width="25"><span style="border-bottom: 1px dotted; cursor: help;" title="Drawn">D</span></th><th width="25"><span style="border-bottom: 1px dotted; cursor: help;" title="Lost">L</span></th><th width="25"><span style="border-bottom: 1px dotted; cursor: help;" title="Goals for">GF</span></th><th width="25"><span style="border-bottom: 1px dotted; cursor: help;" title="Goals against">GA</span></th><th width="25"><span style="border-bottom: 1px dotted; cursor: help;" title="Goal difference">GD</span></th><th width="25"><span style="border-bottom: 1px dotted; cursor: help;" title="Points">Pts</span></th></tr><tr style="background:blue; -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-origin: padding; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous;"><td style="text-align: left;"><span class="flagicon"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a4/Flag_of_the_United_States.svg/22px-Flag_of_the_United_States.svg.png" class="thumbborder" height="12" width="22">&nbsp;</span><a href="/wiki/United_States_men%27s_national_soccer_team" title="United States men's national soccer team">United States</a></td><td>8</td><td>5</td><td>1</td><td>2</td><td>14</td><td>9</td><td>+5</td><td><b>16</b></td></tr><tr style="background:blue; -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-origin: padding; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous;"><td style="text-align: left;"><span class="flagicon"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fc/Flag_of_Mexico.svg/22px-Flag_of_Mexico.svg.png" class="thumbborder" height="13" width="22">&nbsp;</span><a href="/wiki/Mexico_national_football_team" title="Mexico national football team">Mexico</a></td><td>8</td><td>5</td><td>0</td><td>3</td><td>12</td><td>9</td><td>+3</td><td><b>15</b></td></tr><tr style="border-bottom: 3px solid green;"><td style="text-align: left;"><span class="flagicon"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/82/Flag_of_Honduras.svg/22px-Flag_of_Honduras.svg.png" class="thumbborder" height="11" width="22">&nbsp;</span><a href="/wiki/Honduras_national_football_team" title="Honduras national football team">Honduras</a></td><td>8</td><td>4</td><td>1</td><td>3</td><td>14</td><td>8</td><td>+6</td><td><b>13</b></td></tr><tr style="border-bottom: 3px solid blue;"><td style="text-align: left;"><span class="flagicon"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f2/Flag_of_Costa_Rica.svg/22px-Flag_of_Costa_Rica.svg.png" class="thumbborder" height="13" width="22">&nbsp;</span><a href="/wiki/Costa_Rica_national_football_team" title="Costa Rica national football team">Costa Rica</a></td><td>8</td><td>4</td><td>0</td><td>4</td><td>9</td><td>13</td><td>−4</td><td><b>12</b></td></tr><tr><td style="text-align: left;"><span class="flagicon"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/34/Flag_of_El_Salvador.svg/22px-Flag_of_El_Salvador.svg.png" class="thumbborder" height="12" width="22">&nbsp;</span><a href="/wiki/El_Salvador_national_football_team" title="El Salvador national football team">El Salvador</a></td><td>8</td><td>2</td><td>2</td><td>4</td><td>8</td><td>10</td><td>−2</td><td><b>8</b></td></tr><tr style="background:red; -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-origin: padding; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous;"><td style="text-align: left;"><span class="flagicon"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/64/Flag_of_Trinidad_and_Tobago.svg/22px-Flag_of_Trinidad_and_Tobago.svg.png" class="thumbborder" height="13" width="22">&nbsp;</span><a href="/wiki/Trinidad_and_Tobago_national_football_team" title="Trinidad and Tobago national football team">Trinidad and Tobago</a></td><td>8</td><td>1</td>

RED is eliminated. Blue means qualified for at least a CONMEBOL playoff spot.

After the 1-3 start, everyone was laughing at my team. We're certainly not stinking it up now.

I agree. It's frustrating because we have players who are capable, but Bradley is just a horrible coach imo. How can Jozy who bare got any playing until be starting? He's finally in a better situation, but he was stuck like Adu not too long ago. I just don't think you can play a defensive style game when your team is not that great defensively...it just doesn't work...

    Fire Bradley, Hire Kinnear

But I'm afraid it's too late for that...

I agree with you. Last night it seemed like after they scored they did a much better job of keeping possession and building up attacks. I think part of it was just being calmer and trying to control the game, and part of it was the substitutions. We're to the point that we're good enough to still win games when playing poorly, but don't seem to realize that we're that good yet.

Dempsey seems to drift in and out of games and makes bad decisions by trying to do too much or trying to be too fancy. He does have his moments that can lead to good things though so I don't see him losing his spot any time soon. He does seem to be more effective as a forward, but I wouldn't want to break up the Altidore/Davies pairing.
