I would think shooting once would be enough to scare these 16 year olds into leaving the house. He really needed to shoot 3 of them?

How do you that would really scare them off? More than one kid was armed. What happens when the homeowner fires a shot to "scare" them off? He gives away his position. In these situations, there's really no time to think "What if?". As cold as it sounds, shoot first ask questions later is really the best policy when it's 4 intruders against 1 home owner.

xxxx Cheese does stand out nicely amongst the "Nice post" reps I think...

Are you saying that you are the stick, and we are the ants? Or, you are the poker, the stick is Tschmal, and we are the ants. No matter how I look at it, I am a damn ant!

and if it wasn't? how are you going to apply rational thought in a situation like that? for all he knew, three of the four intruders had loaded guns... you're gonna tell us that in that situation you would have a cool enough head (and big enough balls) to shoot once in hoping that these armed intruders would be scared off???

    give me a break.

If this went down as described, it's a no-brainer. An armed group of people break into my house with my wife and child inside. I would shoot them with no warning and honestly I don't think I would feel to guilty after.

I initially thought this until I read the story and saw that one had a real weapon and two more had very realistic looking BB guns. I don't see what else this guy could have done when he looks into his living room and sees 3 guys who are definitely armed and a 4th who very well could be. He can't shoot one or shoot in the air and just hope it scares them. Situations like that only give the homeowner one chance (at most) to get a shot off before the "bad guys" can start firing back.

Notice: "He really needed to shoot 3 of them?" is in the form a question. I don't know what I'd do in that situation.

With some time to think about (perhaps overthink) it, I expect intruders would rather not get into a gunfight with a homeowner. So if they know the homeowner has a gun and will use it to protect the house, they will flee instead of stick around. Fire once to let them know you're a threat. If they don't immediately turn around to get the hell out of there, shoot again.

Edit: Didn't realize more than one was armed. I was assuming only one intruder had a weapon, and that's what the homeowner saw.

    2 words: Good Shooting.

This should deter any other punks from following the same sad pattern.

Bad situation but you gotta do what you gotta do to protect yourself...

Its rare to hear a success story for people that have guns at home for protection.Suprised this wasnt a story about drunk college kids getting a hold of a gun etc

it's the teenagers that you have to worry about. they're the ones that are least likely to think about the consequences of their actions... especially when they're scared.

sorry 3 teens had to die, but the homeowner potentially saved future families from going though the same ordeal. they mostly certainly would've done it again had the home invasion been successful.

i'd buy the guy a case of beer if i could.

They deserved to die. I hope the 4th one gets tried as an adult.

I don't think anyone deserves to die for mistakes they make as 16 year olds, but at the same time the home owner was absolutely justified to defend himself and the home. Those kids took their lives out of their hands and chanced it.

    Durvasa,

While I agree with you that most people who break into your home aren't interested in a gun fight with you, if you see three of them seemingly armed with guns, it's safe to assume they might be willing to kill anyone in the house. Under those circumstances, I don't think there is any need to hesitate; you get a shot, you take it, and you shoot to kill.

Sad really. A bunch of kids do something stupid and get themselves killed. Mothers, sisters, brothers, fathers, etc. will be upset for a long time now.

    Murder charge. Not guilty.

    Illegal possession of firearm. Guilty.

    I agree.

    Durvasa,
you don't have time to think, if all you see a bunch of dudes with guns breaking your house and you have a gun, you shoot.

look at that family in florida who got killed. they adopted a bunch of needy kids. the killers didn't care.

16 years old with a gun is a person who can kill you. so better him than you.

Home invasion with armed intruders -- resident was well within his rights, but I think some interesting info is going to come out about the residents of that house.

    Robbery FAIL?

I'm not a fan of guns, but those kids had what was coming to them. I'm glad he shot those kids dead, b/c it will hopefully serve as deterrent to other thieves in the area.

No ****. You go into a house that is occupied in the middle of the night with guns, and you've got no sympathy from me.

That said, this looks like a drug sitch gone wrong.

Somebody has to be held accountable. Unfortunately, the kids were and paid their lives. The guy at home had no idea what they were going to do, rob him? kill him? He had every right to defend his property. 16 or not, paying the consequences for your decisions are a part of life. Unfortunately, they paid with their lives.
