I have a celoron, but AI'm thinking of having a computer built. My brother says an amd is cheaper but every bit as good as a Pentium. Any thoughts?
I have personally owned 2 AMD Athlons (one Athlon Classic and one Athlon XP), and I've got about 200 AMD Athlons here on campus. I've only had to RMA one chip. Athlon XP performance and stability are equivalent to a P4, with the price being nicer than the P3 AMD rocks!
I got an Athlon XP and I don't have any probs with it. My computer buddies say the samething as your brother.
All my pc's are AMD's and all the ones I throw together in the forseeable future will be as well. Well, other than the Mac G4 that I have. Intel? Pfft... overpriced.
I have an athlon. I've read that while Intel's frontside bus is marketed at 400 mhz, functionally it is only 100 mhz, whereas AMD (functionally) is 133 mhz. The price was much better than Intel until recently, though I think Intel announced within the last week or so that they're cutting prices 50 percent across the board? No, I don't have any evidence of that, but I think I saw it on the news? Then again I could just be imagining it, just as I imagined I was opped in chat last night >:|
Sorry sir, but you represented a severe security violation! ... not to mention the incessant whining... oy!
If you don't use an Intel chip then these guys will come get you! Seriously though, AMD and Intel are neck and neck. Save yourself some money and get an AMD.
AMD is just awesome. I have a AMD Thunderbird 800mhz chip on a A-bit mother board and has been running awesome the past 2 years. I had a celeron on the machine before this one and that crapped out on me in less than a year. Before that i had a Cyrix, remember those? That one is surprisingly stil running after 5 years.
I am a Intel zealot myself, however I build alot of pc's on my side business and the Athlon XP is a very nice chip. It has a real good price/performance ratio and is stable. But when the prices are close I always go Intel. Their prices have come down alot for instance you could get the Pentium 4 1.6A (northwood) for only 140.00 at newegg.com and is a great little overclocking chip that just rocks.
I built a computer in the past and used AMD processors. They worked great. I was impressed with them. I am using Penitum 4s right now because I bought preassembled Dells when I replaced my computers earlier this year. Had I built again or gotten something more custom, I likely would've gone with AMD or at least strongly considered going with 'em.
