Yes, he was the co-rookie of the year but yoy gave up a starting PF which we need(Othella,) and a scorer in Dickerson. We should of just traded Dickerson for Francis straight up without involving Orlando. But Francis did show a spark this year. IMO, Othella is a great backup PF, but not a starter. Orlando had to be involved to make the deal work money wise. Dickerson is going to be a really good SG. Francis is going to be a super star. I'd make that deal again in a minute. ------------------
Playing with statistics, imagine a bell curve. Let's say the superstars are in the top 0.1%. Stars, or very good players, may be in the top 1%. We're talking 1 out of every 1000 players are superstars (that may be conservative) and 1 out of every 100 are stars (again, maybe conservative). The point is that superstars are very rare, much more so than the 'very good' players. Now how many championship teams have there been that didn't have a superstar? MJ, Olajuwon, Duncan, Kareem, Majic, Bird, McHale, Isaiah, Dr. J.--shoot, they all did. And barring a freak injury, Steve Francis will be a superstar. To think about how much this kid did in his first year, with a not-extensive history in the sport, and at one of the most difficult positions to learn in the most difficult league, it would be nearly absurd to doubt this. On top of it all, he's got a great work ethic, big heart and has proven he has the ability to play within the team (as opposed to other "proven" young players such as Allen Iverson and Vince Carter who have yet to show that they can do so). Another question: out of all those superstars, how many were as exciting as Steve Francis? Not many. And with the league as superstar hungry as it is in the post-Jordan era, Francis can be extremely big. Having lived (and died, so many heartbreaking times) a Houston sports fan, especially the Rockets, it is almost unbelievable the Rockets have landed such a player. I would do that trade again, in a heartbeat. You get a franchise player for 2 (not counting price) average- above average players. I wish we could have kept some of the other players vancouver dumped on us, but i guess we had alterior motives. Was the Francis trade worth it? I think that's what Vancouver is asking themselves. Carr and Price were insignificant throw-ins so basically the Grizzlies got Dickerson (great acquisition), Othella (who wants out of Vancouver already) and a first round pick. Considering they gave up someone who could very well be a global superstar -- not the "best" trade for them. They got what they could and did pretty well because Francis wanted out of Canada... but I guarantee they would love to have a core of Bibby, Francis and Shareef right now. Of course. I would do it in a heartbeat. MD and Othella played with Bibby and Abdur-Rahim and they won 22 games. How many games would they win if they had played with Mobley and Anderson? I would say 15 games. With Francis, we won 34 games. MD is a very nice player and could be in all star games for a couple of times in future. But Francis is just in another level - Superstar. ------------------
I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned how the position of the team has changed because of that trade. The two scenarios that could have occurred are:- 1. Dream and Chuck aren't injured. (Outside) shot at progressing in playoffs, Cat stuck at the point, MD shoots kick-out threes, no chance for a decent lottery pick. Our two young players don't develop, and the only leadership comes from our veterans. 2. The old guys get injured. Othella shows more of his talents, and limitations, the guards shoulder more of the offense and develop more as players. Shot at a lottery pick, and gaining a rookie to be team leader. Instead, we have a respectable (in the circumstances) season, gain a floor leader, and franchise player to build around. New offensive system beds in, and a chance for the team of the future to play plenty of minutes together. All things considered, the trade was a good one, although I liked the players we lost, surely no one thinks that we lost a shot at the title by trading, and if we didn't lose that, then what did we lose? ------------------

Actually, it is a good question. Francis is a good player, I don't put him in the great category yet, he needs to show it night in and night out. 18.5 points a game is nice, but we will see if he improves. Dickerson is a quality player, who plays good D, Othella is a nice back up type player. I would still make the trade, but only based on potential. I am not sold on Francis yet, he needs to improve his decision making process during the course of the game, and playing defense would be nice too. Time will tell, but I am looking forward to watching. DaDakota ------------------

Vancouver came away with a good starting PF that doesn't want to be there and a nice role player in Dickerson, but like you said, Carr and Price "Krispies" were insignificant the entire year. I think the Rockets came away just fine. ------------------ We need some meat in the post!
Not to be rude, but some people have problems writing concisely and correctly. I have no idea what language some people use here.... As for the trade, yes the trade was worth it, very much worth it. Michael Dickerson is a very nice player but one is a franchise with media darling written all over him, and one is a quality player. A player who can be an ALL STAR but not a Hall of Famer. Francis can change the complexity of the game. Dickey, a very nice player will reach a high level, but in no comparison to what Stevie will achieve. Bryce instread of Othela, yeah ofcourse no brainer, but Vancouver is not that stupid. Not that Bryce is not that good, but to get quality you have to give up quality, and Othela had already proven he was a valuable commodity in the NBA. ------------------ A Chuck paraphrase: It was surreal!
