Reading the Wisdom teeth thread made me start this one. Would y'all share your Root canal experiences. I need to get one but I've been stalling on it. How was it when you went in for the Root Canal? How was the pain? Did you do it the traditional way or you got one of the new laser type root canals? How was the pain after you were done? Thanks.
Mine was painless and had no problems afterwards. I did not get gas, simply the deadening shots. I was always wary of one, but would not hesitate to have another if needed. EDIT: Also, it was a "traditional" root canal.
Make sure it's a damn good dentist. I had one done once. it got infected over a holiday weekend and I didn't sleep for 3 days. Then I had to go to big dollar endodontist to get it redone because it calcified over. and this guy had hands the size of otis thorpe...trying to cram them in my mouth. the pain and soreness from just that, far eclipsed anything from the initial root canal.
So what did you do? I may need one. I'm going to an endodontist next week for a consultation referred by my dentist. I saw on their website that they offer IV sedation, something I think I'll want. I had some cap work done recently and the gas really didn't do as I had hoped.
I got one like 3 weeks ago. Painless. Only pain I felt was when he injected my gum, to sleep it. Just a "pinch" pain tho. Since then everything has been OK. Gotta go back next week to finish up the tooth.
Im am the biggest *u$$y when it comes to doctors, and dentists, and let me say.... it wasnt as bad as I thought. I think the pain of root canals is over-rated. Mine was quite tricky too, as the root was turned in a awkward way. Not as bad as you think. Its one of those things, where its best to just bite the bullet, and get r done. Good Luck with it.
How did you guys know you needed it initially? I've had a mild pain deep in my jaw under the last bottom tooth. I went to a new dentist and he said I needed a new crown after touching a VERY sensitive spot on the top of the tooth. Even with the temp crown I still felt the same thing in my jaw. The new crown is currently in, with temp cement. He wants me to go the the endo so I am. I actually feel more comfortable going to a specialist because my new dentist is not as experienced and it shows. (I should have stayed with my previous dentist, but it was just too far from my house.)
I have had two root canals, not bad at all. The worst part of going to the dentist for me, are the X-rays. I hate it when you have to bite down on that giant piece of cardboard they put in your mouth for the X-ray. The cleaning can also hurt.
I just had my permanent crown put in earlier to today from a root canal done almost 3 weeks ago. It was the 2nd to last tooth on the bottom right. The pain was excruciating (infected/exposed nerve) for about 3-4 days in between setting the appointment and actually going in. They numbed my mouth pretty good and I couldn't eat/drink properly for about 4-6 hours. Now, pain what so ever so I guess my dentist did a good job.
Coincidentally, my GF had two root canals done yesterday morning and I was shocked at how good she was afterwards. She said, once the numbness wore off, she felt completely normal with no pain what-so-ever. Like I said, I've heard so many horror stories that I assumed she was going to be in pretty bad shape. The only thing she complained about was she woke up this morning with her jaw feeling a little soar. But, that wasn't because of the root canal. I kid, I kid.
When I had a root canal, it was only slightly painful and that was only briefly during the process (like seconds). The most pain in the butt thing with the root canal was having to have your jaw open that long with all that crap going on in it only to have to come back a 2nd time to finish the procedure. It was nowhere near as bad as people made it out to be. The pain wasn't bad at all.
I'll join the majority by saying my root canal was great. He hit an undeadened nerve once during my 2nd session and that was just a split second shot of pain. Outside of that, it truely was painless during the procedure & recovery time. Basically it was just like having a filling done.
One of the biggest dental misconceptions is that root canals are painful. Lets think about it for a moment... You get shots to numb the tooth, correct? So, during the procedure, you should feel no pain at all. Now, if the file the dentist is using goes goes slightly beyond the end of the tooth, it will hit bone, which may cause some discomfort, but he will pull it back out and it will go away. After the procedure is done, your tooth will no longer have a nerve to cause you pain. Therefore, a root canal can many times be less painful than restoring a tooth that has a big cavity.
When i got root canal done, the doctor gave me two numbing shots and just to be extra careful applied the numbing gel as well. Didn't feel a thing for the next 2 days.
I guess I'm wary because when they were preparing my tooth for the crown a couple of weeks ago they had to give me two shots. And then last week when they took the temp crown off I could feel some pain on top of my tooth.
To all the no-painers, who was the dentist that performed your root canal? I need one (possibly 2) and was referred to a Dr. Zumani. Anyone ever been to him/her?
Hey, for those of you who have had a root canal: How did your tooth/gum feel afterwards? I had the root canal done Tuesday morning. I had general soreness over night and into the day today (Wednesday). I've been taken 500 mg ibuprofen (per instructions) every 4 hours or so. But this afternoon around 3 I felt a very weird sensation. It felt almost has if the ROOTS of my tooth were being pulled for about a second. It happened once then happened again about an hour later, then a couple more times throughout the night so far. Is the just the tooth recovering? It's a very weird sensation and doesn't feel normal to me. I'm going to call them in the morning, but wanted to know if else felt anything similar.
I think I know what you're talking about. The other day I was chewing gum and for a second I felt that weird sensation. Like some tingling inside, like something being pulled, no pain but just a funny feeling. Im guessing its normal. I just had the second procedure done today and my tooth was OK before he worked on it.
