Went to take the car in for a brake job, it was only making noise for a week but they started sounding really bad and it turns out the rear pads were worn to the bottom to the point they have ground down on the rear rotors. before any lectures me how irresponsible I I did have the fronts replaced. was recommended to change the rear but I waited, I really can't believe it got that bad, live and learn oh well. anyway the mechanic is saying he can't let me drive it off the lot, he's saying the entire rear breaks, calibers have to be changed, he isn't charging anything and he will let us get our own tow, but he says he's legally obligated not to let us drive off the lot. keep in mind, we definitely have to change the rotors. has anyone every heard of this, that the mechanic has an obligation legally to not let us drive the car. its a Firestone.
I've heard of this happening a lot with Brake Check/Just Brakes/etc. I don't know the validity of the "can't let you drive" bit though. If they're claiming that you can't drive because your car no longer passes inspection, then why would a state inspector let you drive your car after it fails for any reason? Under that sort of assumption, Jiffy Lube couldn't let you drive off their lot if they see that you have a left front blinker out...
Please please please please please tell me you are not using Just Brakes EDIT: saw that is wasn't Not sure what to tell you, but Just Brakes is run by a bunch of criminals
Call the cops and tell them he won't let you have your car. Then you'll find out if it's true or not.
LOL. Even before I finished reading the entire post I was gonna ask if you were at Firestone. The same exact thing happened to me a few years back - I told the guy to f..k off and took the car ... drove it over to BrakeCheck and fixed it for like $400 less than what Firestone wanted. Firestone sucks!
Definitely get out of there. The only thing out of reach as far as DIY is concerned is remachining the rotors if they arent too worn out. I think OReillys charged me 30$?? The legally obligated thing is questionable, but these are your brakes, so who knows.
