duane allman and dickie betts.... perhaps the greatest 1-2 guitar punch in rock history. add in gregg allman on the hammond b-3 and skynyrd just can't touch it (and i do like skynyrd).

one step further: AM: Skynyrd FM: Allman Brothers As a musician it's the Allman Brothers all the way. As a songwriter, I can't deny Skynyrd...give me three steps buddy!!!!! In the end I voted for the Allman Brothers because I can't tell you how many times I listened to Whipping Post and In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.
If boils down to this for me Skynyrd is music for PWT or pure white trash, they're where the line of bad taste in "Southern Rock" is drawn. Music for rednecks and hillbillies. They couldn't hold a box of candles to the Crowes, IMO. And oh yeah when the Black Wizard himself wanted a backing band to pull of Zeppelin songs who did he call? The Black Crowes! That's Jimmy Page btw..
I think another good point is that the Allman Brothers Band created the Southern Rock Genre. Skynyrd built on the foundation that the ABB laid. Still ... I am hard pressed to name 5 ABB songs, while I can easily name 10+ LS songs. And I got box sets from both. Allman Brothers Band: Ramblin' Man Midnight Rider Whipping Post Lynyrd Skynyrd: Gimme Three Steps Saturday Night Special Gimme Back My Bullets Sweet Home Alabama Tuesday's Gone Free Bird Simple Man That Smell What's Your Name Travilin' Man Call Me The Breeze (cover) T for Texas (cover) Crossroads (cover) Thinking about these songs, another LS ABB difference is that LS had a three guitar "attack".
Wrong. Levon Helm and The Band created Southern Rock (if you don't count blues, Elvis and Buddy Holly).
Who the eff is Levon Helm? How can a band/artist get credit for creating a genre when most people have never heard of them?
just because you've never heard of them doesn't mean most haven't. i think most people have heard of the band.
You haven't heard of The Band? That's not anyone's fault but your own. I have to disagree with Yao Rambis, though. No band that was 4/5 Canadian can be credited with creating Southern Rock. That said, I am looking forward to seeing Levon Helm at ACL this yearn.
All Music Guide 5-star (studio) albums: Allman Bros. - 2 Skynyrd - 2 (Black Crowes - 0) TBC are decent but were probably better when they were called the Faces. They really don't belong in this discussion.
Eh, to be honest, I don't know enough about them to comment. Liked the songs I've heard, but not enough to buy any of their albums. I've never been a fan of the 10-minute extended guitar solo bands. I've never understood bands with 2 drummers. Seems like they would step on each other's toes too much. And if they don't, that would mean they are playing close to the same thing. And if that's the case, why have 2 of them? Just my flea bitten opinion though. I did dig that video you posted.
Joe Dirt! lol <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/AZbdIQLsEpU&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/AZbdIQLsEpU&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Def Leppard SUCKS! Oh, and Lynyrd Skynyrd is my choice.
I have heard of The Band, but did not know who the eff Levon Helm was, until I googled him. I saw _the Last Waltz_ and thus know of some of their songs. I would classify them as Folk Rock more than Southern Rock. That may be since when I think of Southern Rock I always start with ABB.
Is this not Southern Rock? <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/DIpfhEwlw5c&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/DIpfhEwlw5c&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
And Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey from The Who called Lynyrd Skynyrd the "best American band" when they toured with them back in the 70s. But of course, Lynyrd Skynyrd is music for rednecks and hillbillies- Pure White Trash or Caucasian Trash, so I can't like them. And I don't like Sly and the Family Stone because that's African-American music only, and Redbone because that's rock music only for American Indians, and I can't enjoy Los Lobos because that's just a Hispanic-American thing. Just wanted to make sure we got all the segments in there.
Lynard Skynard@allmuisc Lynyrd Skynyrd was the definitive Southern rock band, fusing the overdriven power of blues-rock with a rebellious Southern image and a hard rock swagger. Skynyrd never relied on the jazzy improvisations of the Allman Brothers. Instead, they were a hard-living, hard-driving rock & roll band -- they may have jammed endlessly on-stage, but their music remained firmly entrenched in blues, rock, and country. For many, Lynyrd Skynyrd's redneck image tended to obscure the songwriting skills of their leader, Ronnie Van Zant. Throughout the band's early records, Van Zant demonstrated a knack for lyrical detail and a down-to-earth honesty that had more in common with country than rock & roll. During the height of Skynyrd's popularity in the mid-'70s, however, Van Zant's talents were overshadowed by the group's gritty, greasy blues-rock. Sadly, it wasn't until he was killed in a tragic plane crash in 1977 along with two other bandmembers that many listeners began to realize his talents.
I got today at lunch the ABB's "Live at Fillmore East" and will listen to it this afternoon. I also saw the old Skynyrd compilation CD that I owned but can't find anymore in "Gold" - it was a double CD and contained all their best songs including the little known "Was I Right or Wrong?"
