Craig Roberts's show on Channel 2 used to use a Skynrd song for their intro. So every time I hear Black Betty, I see Jeff Bagwell swinging at a fastball.
most of the song isn't very hard even for beginner. i remember when i first started, i was able to play the beginning without much problem. give give it a try, you should get it soon. back to the topic, hard choice. i like skynyrd more than allman, just my preference though.
You see, I have no retort because I actually like the Allman Brothers a great deal. But TOTALLY better? Silly boy.
I'm not really a fan of 'southern rock' or either of these bands, but at the end of the day I have to go with skynyrd. For sure, the Allman bros were technicaly superior (especially while Duane was alive) and historicaly more inovative, but save (the worn to the bone) 'Freebird' I liked Skynyrds' songs better.
Hey, they're from further south than Skynyrd. Allmans roots are in Pensacola,FL and Macon, GA. Doesn't get any further deep south than that.
Well...I guess Skynyrd is from Jacksonville. We'll call it a tie. But musically...I vote Allman Brothers all the way. I do like them both.
overall the allman brothers win but if that plane hadn't of crashed in 77 who knows what else skynyrd would've come out with
First, I have to say that Ozark Mountain Daredevils have a special place in my heart for giving us the slice of sunsoaked perfection that is "Jackie Blue". Comparing Skynryrd side by side with the brothers is akin to an AC/DC vs Led Zep or Pink Floyd vs King Crimson - iconic bands that were the best at what they did. 111chase111 nailed it btw. Also, The Black Crowes are a good listen, but don't forget that they owe a great deal to Humble Pie.
Also, some people make it sound like Skynyrd were a one-trick pony, simplistic musician type of band. Last I checked, Skynyrd weren't exactly slouches for musicians or limited musically- they have an excellent blend of fast and slow, long and short, simple and more complex music. Plus, RVZ is very, very underrated as a songwriter. Very few groups in rock and roll write lyrics that create vivid images like Van Zandt, whether it be Curtis Lowe, That Smell, What's Your Name, or even Sweet Home Alabama with its Neil Young reference. That being said, need to listen to Eat a Peach- love that CD.
Good post, dando - happen to agree with pretty much of it except I will still take the Allmans over Skynyrd but just barely and we are talking about the classic line-ups here not the ones they are using today. Although I would have to say that the Allman's slide guitarist, Derek Trucks (nephew of original drummer Butch Trucks) seems to be out of this world (I was reading about him last night, he was a prodigy at the age of 11!). And I have never seen what is so great about the Black Crowes (sorry Torn). I have tried them a couple of times but just never saw what was so great about them. I don't think their body of work can compare to either the Allmans or Skynyrd, sorry.
Well, I think he was talking about their live albums, as well, sort of like how the Deadheads praise the GD to the skies for their out-of-this-world live jam sessions and such. While I have much respect for the Deadheads and can see where their devotion comes from, I don't rank the Grateful Dead as high as many do. I guess I'm just more about the song than anything else- 30-minute jams are impressive, I guess, but I'll take Uncle John's Band over a G.D. jam any day. Of course, how do I explain Thick as a Brick is my favorite Jethro Tull CD when it only consists of 1 song 46 minutes long? The world is such a contradictory organization.
I have many fond memories of listening to both of these bands while out on the back porch of the trailer smoking cigerettes with my mom and her boyfriend. I'm kidding!!
I think part of it for me is the song "That Smell". I'm probably in the extreme minority here, but I absolutely detest that song. It makes me want to rip my ear drums out. If everything else is equal between the 2 bands, that song makes me put The Allman Bros. ahead because they didn't make something so unbelievably horrid.
Drummer, no comment on the two drummer sound? It was quite the innovation at the time. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KHhKnc0XZrs&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KHhKnc0XZrs&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
