By the way, I want to point out that everyone piling on Rex Grossman should forever be banned from spouting out ridiculous logic like "X QB took his team to the playoffs"... etc., etc. Of course individual players don't win/lose games in a highly complex sport with dozens of players like the NFL. Yet somehow, the folksy and outdated notion that quarterbacks are to be judged by W/L still exists in a lot of places (see any Vince Young thread, for starters). Let's all remember that Rex Grossman "took" his team to the Super Bowl, and think about how ridiculous that sounds. For the record, I vote for Orlovsky.
If they're scrubs than what is Jason Jennings classification? We've turned Willy Taveras into a quality rotational pitcher with our staff who's to say one of those guys couldn't have done something for us. Tim Purpura just made a move to make 1 not to better the club. It may not have been the "absolute worst in Houston Astros history" but it was pretty damn bad.
A scrub. Well, at least Jennings is a major-league scrub, which is more than can be said for Hirsh. Jennings was one of the most promising arms available on the market at the time, he just couldn't stay healthy, and that was that. In theory, could Hirsh have developed in Houston, like Wandy? Sure, anything's possible in theory. Just like it's possible that Jennings could've remained the same or even improved. It wasn't a bad move -- it was an inconsequential one. Yes, Jennings was horrible, but not a single guy the Astros gave up would even make the current 25-man roster, even on a team with as little depth as we have. (And please, please, check Willy Taveras' numbers before you even think of comparing him to Michael Bourn, as you did before. The only way they're comparable is in speed, but LeBron James and Von Wafer are fairly similar in speed, too -- unfortunately, there are other aspects of the game to consider.) I doubt it would even track the top 20 in terms of worst Astros all-time deals -- those would be reserved for trades in which the Astros gave up something of major league significance. Like, say, Ben Zobrist for Aubrey Huff. Anyway, that's all I'll say on that since I know this is a Texans thread. To steer this the right way, I'll make you an analogy on Orvolsky. I don't think what Orvolsky did even remotely compares to the embarrassing nature of Leon Lett, both on Thanksgiving Day and in the Super Bowl. I also don't think anyone here wouldn't consider Leon Lett a dominant player and a disruptive force. To judge anyone on one play is more than a little silly.
BTW, you're arguing with a guy who said Trung Canidate would have a better season than Warrick Dunn, Chris Simms would be a Top 5 pick in the NFL Draft, Tony Hollings would have a 1000 yard season, etc, etc.
Yeah, and they paid Sage Rosenfels Sage Rosenfels money when they signed him away from Miami several years ago. People whined and moaned then that Sage was not worth that much and spending that much on a backup was ridiculous. But Kubiak saw something in the guy that was worth developing. I'm willing to trust him on Orlovsky as well. If your argument is that we could have gotten him much cheaper...well, that may be true, but I doubt that particular contract is going to hamper the team that much.
FLASH21, just horrid analysis of Orlovsky. I'm guessing you didn't realy watch enough Lions football to make those judgments
Probably didn't set too well with a certain Trio of players currently wondering where their long-term deals are. Orlovsky is nothing special on the surface, maybe Kubiak has some magic potion he rubs on QBs to make them not suck so much. Who knows. I guess we'll find out once Schaub takes his annual vacation during the season.
He also spent more time on his back this decade than Jenna Jameson. There was little anyone could do with that poor b*stard. He did have nice hair though.
hahaha, funny. sorry but you've got the wrong guy on that one. @ The Cat, I don't agree with any moves Purpura made while he was in charge. Lee was a bad signing IMO comparing contract to production. And that's all I'll say bout that. Now about these 2 scrub BU's everyone is arguing about, first of all no one is judging Dan on 1 bonehead play, that's all it was, I'm not basing my perseption/analysis on him. Second name one big time receiver Rex had at Chicago. I'm not using that as an excuse for him being an absolute debocle on bad days, but if he had a "security blanket" with someone like CJ that would have possibly made him a tad more reliable. I honestly just hope that Schaub stays on his feet and we don't have to bring these guys up besides pre season chat. They both suck, reason, they're both back ups.
using the same shallow logic and lack of insight, couldn't he basically do the same thing here with our johnson, only with a better second WR, running back, tight end, offensive line, offensive coaching staff........ kubiak has a very strong track record with QBs - plummer, schaub, rosenfels... no reason to think, unless he's not mentally capable and/or committed, that a young, raw QB like orlovsky can't join the list. given the circumstances, he played decently last year. he posted a 88.2 or better QB rating in 4 of his 8 starts. on that team, that's fairly remarkable. but sure, he ran out of the back of the end zone once in one of the loudest most hostile home field advantages in the entire NFL while making his second-ever start - he must suck. great point.
I'd rather have Orlovsky if I were you guys. He was a member of my fantasy squad last year so I followed him and took an interest in games he started. Overall, he seemed to have his best games against some of the best defenses that he faced (Indianapolis, Minnesota, Washington) and for anybody that followed the Lions at all, you would know that they choked time & time again down the stretch. Orlovsky was a few bad breaks/plays away from being a 2-3 win starter which isn't bad at all considering he only started 10 games.
You do realize that Schaub was illegally hit late by Jared Allen ? It cost Allen $50,000. I'm not sure if any qb could have withstood an injury with that type of hit. That is why it's not allowed.
Schaub needs to work on not getting cheap-shotted then. Maybe his offensive line needs to get a little nasty.
Dan O takes a lot of flack but he was in a bad position in detroit but i actually think he can be a servicable backup. If you look at his numbers for the middle chunk of the season from last year...they are fairly decent.
If you just look at Orlovsky's numbers there not bad for someone who only started 7 games and played in 10... TDS INT YDS RTG 8 8 1,616 72.6 You could project that out to be better then Avg for an entire season and considering he was on the worst team in NFL history record wise he should have the edge.
Orlovsky Compare the numbers to Sage's numbers last year (with better weapons) hes not as terrible as some of you think. http://www.nfl.com/stats/headtohead...Select+a+Player...&playerFour=Select+a+Player... That being said, this team is having trouble staying healthy.
