Rugby and AFL are completely different sports. Despite the fact, they're both referred to in Australia as a 'football' sports. To put it simply, rugby is much like your grid iron. A team of player oppositely face each other and there is a ball shaped like a pigskin however bigger that can be passed between them. It must be passed to a player behind them and they cannot knocked it forward with their hands. They must score a 'try' by putting the rugby ball down on the try line which is on the far side of the opposing territory. AFL is where a similar shaped ball is kicked between the players. The only methods of passing is a kick to another player or a method called handball where it is passed to another player using an upwards pumping motion. They score by kicking the ball between two posts on the other side of the field.

Since you do watch Rugby, I suggest you watch the Haka. It's a tribal dance that the New Zealand All Blacks do before every game. It's basically a bunch of big men yelling and slapped their thighs.

    Hope that helps.

AFL is so much better then any form of Rugby. Its much quicker and more free flowing game.

The objective is to score points through kicking Goals which a worth six points, and behinds that have a value of one.
The Scorecard gennerally reads like this.

    Goals/Behinds = Total.

    eg. 10/5/=65

Like i said the game is fairly free flowing, it does involve tackling but only to an certain extent. Alot of basketball players find it easy to transition into this game.

AFL aka. Aussie Rules, is similar to basketball in it's pace and the fact it is free flowing.

Players can run around the field and kick/pass it to each other much like basketball players rund around a court. Obviously, the field is much bigger, but the pace is similar. Goals are attempted very often, much like scoring points in basketball.

Rugby (whether it is rugby league or rugby union), is more similar to grid iron as the game is less freeflowing. Both teams stay on the same side (to avoid offsides).

In terms of scoring, they score tries, much like touch downs in grid iron. Scoring is rugby is not as often and easy as it is in AFL or basketball. Much like grid iron once again.

Man, the guys who play Rugby professionally have no idea what they are doing -- there is no explaining that sport.

League is actually great and pretty easy to understand, fast paced action. Union is harder follow and nobody knows the rules. Too bad it's the more popular one.

the biggest problem with the AFL is the cockhead that runs the show, CEO Andrew Demetriou.

    Hard headed twat he is.

Could not agree with you more.. Demitriou will be the death of AFL, rule changes every year, $100million down the drain with the stupid Western Sydney team.. Not to mention the head in the sand attitude about tanking.. Long running problem of the Grand Final ticketing, with members battling to get a ticket to the game why bandwagon sponsers etc get gifted tickets.. Keep saying members are the life blood of the game, but then they cannot get a ticket to the biggest game of the year.. Disgrace..

granted as an Essendon supporter, not really i problem i'm going to face to many a year..

Everybody knows that purple is the next black ;)

I do agree in regards to AD, people complain about Stern leading the NBA, imagine if they had to put up with Demetriou's reign

I've always been interested in Aussie culture. I think the band cut copy started that. I stay up late on the weekends and I stated noticing games on Jtv. I started watching them there so...

I remember when ESPN was first starting out Australian Rules football was on CONSTANTLY...usually with Carlton playing somebody. I think I even (looking for after school sports programming) watched a few whole games..didn't really understand what I was watching though.

How long ago was this? Im curious to know which generation of players you watched. Espn is only a recent channel in Australia. Started airing around 7, 8 years ago.

ESPN showed Aussie rules back when it was just starting out. I remember watching games in the '80s and on into the '90s.

Good news is that ESPN will again start to show Aussie Rules Football. ESPN2 will show the 2009 Grand Final live. Then in 2010 and 2011 we'll see at least four matches per season in addition to the Grand Finals. Also, ESPN360.com will stream live matches.
