This was a heated topic in my youth and is still a tough choice for me. And I'm talking primo versions... say, the first 6 albums for each band. I guess it all boils down to this:

Big Ten Inch Record or Ice Cream Man?

Only the Diamond Dave version, of course. That goes without saying. When they first came on the scene, no one had ever seen anything like them. It can be argued that no one has seen anything like them since then, either..

I don't know, I've always thought Aerosmith was a bit overrated. [ducks for cover]

DLR-based VH only. Aerosmith is tainted by their heroin years. Plus, a lot of their music is forgettable diatribe. They do have their classic hits and their newer mainstream pop, though ("Love in an Elevator", "Jamie's Got a Gun"). Their peak was when "Walk this Way" went Run DMC's way.

Aerosmith has basically morphed into a band that makes good music for forgettable movies and their soundtracks.

very tough choice. also agree that it comes down to the first 6:

    1. Van Halen I vs. Toys in the Attic: VH1
    2. Fair Warning vs. Rocks: Rocks
    3. Women and Children First vs. Get Your Wings: W&CF
    4. 1984 vs. Aerosmith: Aerosmith
    5. Van Halen II vs. Draw The Line: DTL
    6. Diver Down vs. Night in the Ruts: Diver Down

So, damn, tied. OK, it's a tie. Too close to call.

Never could get into either one of these although I do have albums by both. I will go with VH mainly because I felt that Aerosmith became beyond annoying with their MTV "re-birth" in the '80s and we can thank Run-DMC for that! Of course, that is just my opinion, so don't crucify me.

VH. I've always thought that Aerosmith was a bit too much on the hairband side.
