If you had to choose between Shandon and Cuttino, who would you pick?

    This question stumps me all the time. If we had the opportunity to trade one of these players in a package to get a even better player, which one would you trade?

    If you ask me, they are two completely different players. I love the way Shandon plays D and can move without the ball. He does a lot of other things other than scoring that I think is essential to the team's success (i.e. rebounding, moving w/o the ball, defense, passing).

    However Cuttino is one of those rare players who has a lot of heart. As we all know Cuttino and Francis have become really close friends. And breaking those two a part "can" present trouble in the future, when it comes to Francis and the Rockets.

    I would sure love to keep both and I think we will in the short term. But if we had to trade one in order to land a player like Shareef Abdur Rahim, who would you trade?

    The answer to me depends on who else is on the team. If we can add a low post player who can score I think Mobley is more expendable, but if we get a defensive low post player with limited offensive (Cato II) then I think we need Mobley more for his offense.
    Hopefully we can keep both of these guys becasue I love Cuttino's offenisve game and his heart and Anderson is a great defensive player who can get on a roll offensively as well.

    Right now it's a wash. Two years from now, Cuttino will be so far and away superior, it won't warrant a discussion.

    I'd keep Anderson and trade Mobley without blinking. I'm not a Mobley basher, but Anderson brings more to the team than he does.

    It depends on who we get--for Shareef Abdur Rahim (hey! someone else thinks we might get him!) I think we keep Cuttino. We're already thin at SF.

    But who is more important to the team? One way to look at it is where is there overlap? I believe Cuttino and Stevie do pretty much the same thing (a big generalization here)--able to explode from the perimeter, direct the offense, nail the three, take the ball in crunch time, etc. Obviously Francis is a better PG, and a better player overall now and in the future (although the Cat is damn good and getting better).

    Shandon is also getting better, plus he brings a lot of skills already mentioned in the thread. BUT, he can play 2 positions which include the SF, so he has less of an overlap with Steve.

    So I'd keep Shandon if the trade wasn't for Rahim.

    Both Cat and Shandon are going to get better,but I will have to go with Shandon. He's a great player on the run,plays D, has a decent shot and a great attitude on the court. He could be a Pippen without the sorry ass attitude.
    I've always said keep them all. Cat,Shandon and Stevie. This is a great combo.
    I think Cat is a player that needs to improve his shot selection, he's kind of wild, but that crazyness gives him an edge, sometimes.
    Anyway my pick would be Shandon, by a nose.
    Maybe It's because I like players who work and do whatever it takes to win. I think Shandon is that type of player.
    I live in Miami and as good as Alonzo is, I cant stand all that crying he does after he gets fouled.It makes me like Shandon more.

    I would keep Cuttino for 3 reasons, two of them dealing with Steve Francis and all of them related.

    1) His improvement from rookie to sophomore year was unbelievable. He worked his ass off in the summer leagues and became an offensive weapon. He vows to keep this up.

    2) He is Steve Francis' best friend and they are going to work out together. If Cuttino works hard and improves, Steve will to. Can you imagine how good Steve will be even next year if he improves like Mobley did.

    3) Keep Francis here. The Wizards have 3 things that we do not: Michael Jordan, Stevie's grandma, and his supposed girlfriend, Chamique Holdsclaw, who plays for the Mystics. Washington is home, so you know he could jump ship immediately, especially if his best bud the Cat is gone.

    Ok, just for Juan....

    I would keep Shandon, he is a bigger player whom does not command the ball. He plays better D, moves without the ball much better, and is smarter.

    Now ask again, in 2 or 3 years, and if Cuttino keeps improving, and Shandon does not improve his dribbling and his jump shot, then I will take Cuttino.

    I really want to keep them both, the only way I trade either of them is to get a SuperStar SF or PF/C.

    Happy? Juan?

    I wouldn't trade Shandon for anything this side of Shaq or Duncan or Garnett.

    The reason is that Shandon is that rare player that makes championship teams. He is like Joe Dumars, in my book. He is that type of player. And teams with that type of player and the intangibles on offense(the ability to explode or blend in) and on defense(concentrate on shutting down the main guard scorer)are what championship teams need.

    And even if Cuttino is a better player 3 years from now, the question is who is the better team player and how irreplaceable is he?

    There are 5 Mobleys for every Anderson in the NBA. I'd keep Anderson without even a second of hesitation. But, we have them both and that is good also.

    "5 Cuttino's for every Shandon"...well, I'd like that run through DoD's database.

    Would you do us the favor DoD?

    OK, so you ask, which would you like, for me to cut off your right arm or your left arm?

    Hey, I don't like the choices. We'll get front court help through the draft, FAs and other trades. Francis, Anderson and Mobely are a killer combo. At any point in time, two are usually in there with no drop off in pressure.

    I think we'll (1) trade Drew and someone for Kandi, (2) pick up Leon Smith, (3) draft Swift, Miles or Miller this year somehow, (4) trade for another SF or PF with our exception and a player, and (5) next year pick up Webber or Duncan after Dream leaves. We don't need to panic. We'd always regret it if we traded either one. One's a playmaker and the other's an anchor.

    We need them both.

    Actually, the more I think about it, there could easily be 5 Cuttino's for every Shandon. Hell, there are something like 8 George Foreman's for every Muhammad Ali isn't there.

    Well... I just say trade him, but ok... It really depends on how you define "a Mobley". Obviously there are intangibles in his game that you can't analyze using just numbers, but just by looking at the numbers, here you go:

    I searched for all players last season averaging the following. Mobley's numbers are in parentheses :

    Minutes per game between 20 and 35 (30.8)
    Points per game >= 13 (15.8)
    FG% >=42 (43)
    3PT% >= 33 (35.6)
    Free Throws Attempted per Minute >= 0.11 (.14)
    Games Played >= 55 (81)

    The results I got :

    Derrick Coleman
    Lamond Murray
    Glen Rice
    Mitch Richmond
    Steve Smith
    Bob Sura
    Keith Van Horn

    One stat I like about Mobley is his FT Attempted per Minute Played. This set him apart from several other players at his position. The only SG's ranked higher in this stat than he is were Stackhouse, Paul Pierce, Larry Hughes, Kobe Bryant, Eddie Jones, and Mitch Richmond (who was basically tied with Mobley).

    If somebody sees something wrong with any of these numbers, lemme know. I' dreally appreciate it. I'm trying to correct some stuff I screwed up on earlier.

    So, that means there are 8 Cuttino's and 1.60 Shandon's in this league when you plug Almu's formula into DoD's query. Hmmmm...I was right; he is on his was to catching the miracle of 8 George Foreman's.

    So, What if...

    we trade Drew for that .6 of a Shandon who is out there somewhere? Can someone find him? I think that's a good trade. We'd end up with 1.6 Shandon's that we could then trade for 8 Cuttino's. Then, we could trade the 8 Cuttino's for Duncan.

    Dr of Dunk,
    This is the first time I recall reading anything about this database of yours. Is it on the Web or is it proprietary? Sounds like sort of a fun tool for those of us who like stat comparisons. Just curious, thanks.

    I think that Mobley, along with Francis bring something that the Rockets NEED, and have not seen outside of Barkley. This thing gentlemen, you either have or you don't. You can't learn,develope or mature into it. It' called FIRE and noone here can deny that Steve and Cuttino's fire burns the brightest. You can see it on thier faces, in their actions and thier reactions. The important thing is that they are able to inject that fire into each other, and into thier teammates. Sometime it's all a matter of who want's it more, and with Cuttino you can see it. It burns in his heart and he wears it on his sleeve for us all to see. The other thing is, if you all were watching, there was noone who could stop him 1 on 1. He started to demand a double-team on the isolation plays that weere ran for him, and with his passing ability that will be invaluable. AND THIS WAS ONLY HIS 2nd YEAR!!!! Cuttino will gain the controll that he needs, and get better in his decission making as well. I like Shandon a lot, but he is just to passive. All in all I say keep it together. We have a great goup of young guys.
