Sorry. Wrong address. IMDiversity.com I don't want people to take this incorrectly. I'm just saying that if someone says something to you, personally, that you find offensive, you would likely be hurt by it and think differently of the person saying it. Considering the fact that we may very well draft a Chinese-born player, it is probably a good idea that we all learn a respectful way to address each other. If we have respect for others, we will treat them with it and learn to address them as such. It is simply a matter of courtesy and I don't see anything wrong with that.

People do extensive historical studies so that people can reach a common understanding of where they're coming from, or try to. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and often getting everyone on the same page is as difficult as if they were talking to (or rather, past) each other in different languages altogether. And if you want an illustration of the chaos that often results, just turn on the news. Since I'm already off-topic, I looked up General Social Survey data available on-line and it looks like almost 90% of Americans believe at least somewhat in (a) God or some higher power. Almost 80% of Americans consider themselves Protestant or Catholic (Protestants outnumbering Catholics slightly more than 2 to 1). About one in seven claim no religion. It seems that less than ten percent of Americans practice a different faith. Naturally, these are approximates, and I did the arithmetic on 1998 data if anyone cares.
Nah, Jeff....there's nothing wrong with common courtesy. I think what you have here is a massive forum full of lots of people who have varying opinions of what is offensive, what needs to be addressed as possibly rude, and what should just be ignored in order for a thread to keep going. Different opinions. hey.....diversity. So how about that Houston Rockets team, anyway? Any idea who they might draft?
Jeff,My friends are from China and the Orient in general and NEVER find any problem being refered to as Orientals!! My Chinese friends, though dont like being lumped in with other Oriental Peoples. My Japanese friends are the same way! Vietnamiese seem to be the most easy going on this topic.
What if Yao is so religiously dedicated and he will actually become a priest?! Will anyone feel sorry for the two-year-old poor Francis then?! *smile*
But there are at least 15 Christian Churches to every Muslim Mosque in Houston. But by Yao Mings statements I think he could be Buddhist because of the lack of interest in money.
JWD: Sorry. I didn't mean to pick on you and this wasn't an attack. I'm sure your friends feel that way and that's great. I have Latino friends who care less when we joke about our own racial stereotypes with one another. I'm just suggesting that, given the fact that this board deals with many people we DON'T KNOW, it might be a good idea to consider their feelings in the matter. Your experience, while certainly valid for you and your friends, doesn't necessarily represent the whole of Asian culture. Just something to take into account. lovethisgametoo: I don't really know what I'm going to do about 10,000. It is coming up fast. We'll see. *smile*
J. W. D.Walker, it might be more of a younger-generation Asian American thing that has issues with Oriental. That's cool if your friends are comfortable with the word, but plenty of Asian Americans are not. All he's saying is that many Asian Americans don't appreciate being referred to as "Orientals." In my opinion, you adapt your language to your surroundings. In a public setting where we don't know what background everyone is coming from, I feel it's better to default on the safe side. That's all.
What about Ming decides to retire from professional basketball and becomes a priset before he can help to bring us championships?...hmm...definitely another thing to worry about and another reason for the naysayer not to draft Yao Ming I guess...
that would be great if Yao enters the priesthood. You think Mike got away with calls, Yao'd be able to get away with anything once he donned the white collar (except pedophilia). Can you imagine hitting a priest with a technical? REF: "Uh, Father Yao, I have to give you a technical." FATHER YAO: "MY child, I didn't see you at Mass last Sunday. Do you want to experience eternal damnation?" REF: "Ummm...no." FATHER YAO: "I thought so. Then repent your sins. Say two Our Fathers and three Hail Marys the next timeout and in your spiritual interest, I'd advise against calling goal tending on me anymore tonight." REF: "Yes, Father." FATHER YAO: "Alright, my child. I'll see you in confession. Hey Steve, why the f*** did you wave me off? J**** f***ing C*****, Coach said to give it to me down low when I've established position. You need to respect the f***ing post. FOCKASS!"
Didn't someone already go over this? There's certainly still a sizeable Buddhist population on mainland China, but it is nothing like the relative populations in other east Asian areas: Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. There are far more Buddhists in Taiwan (percentage-wise) than there are on the mainland. Yao Ming may turn out to be Buddhist, but the odds are not in your favor at *all*. If Yao Ming has a lack of interest in money, you can more likely credit that to a mix of Communist/Socialist ideology and Confucian ideology... unlikely it is remotely religious.
Why does Yao have to be religious, I think it would be great if he was an atheist. But as a fan, if he has to be religious, i hope its not a religion where he has to fast, Olajuwon said it didn't bother him, but in some games he just looked tired to me but really, i dunno and don't really care what his religion is as long as it doesn't affect his game. Hell, if he decides to sacrifise goats blood to the prince of darkness before every game and score 50 pts, i say go for it more power to him.
I am asian myself, i am cambodian. i don't really like Oriental myself. I prefer asian. yeah i know, when you say asian, you might be saying indian, and kazakastan, and malayasia, and all that stuff. but, still asian sounds better, because im not a rug.
