I was listening to The Bench this morning and they brought up something of interest.

They mentioned how Hill has said that he is willing to play for an exception for one year with a contender. (That would most likely exclude us.) He is willing to play cheap for one year because after next season he will be in that bracket of players who are allowed to make $10 million/year. So why sign a multi-year deal now when you can sign for the big bucks a year later.

This makes perfect sense to me, however he stated that would like to play for a contender.

    Now off to dreamland.....

    Francis/Norris
    Anderson/Mobley
    Hill/Williams
    ?/Thomas
    Dream/Cato(?)/?

Now wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have to trade away anyone at all? We could dump who we don't need to make room for Hill and our draft picks.

    Back to reality.....

We can't really consider ourselves contenders yet. We have high hopes and potential but that's about it. I'm sure he would chose to go to somewhere like NY or Miami. Let's just hope that LA or Portland are not options. Thry may be tapped out on the salary cap but I'm sure they can come up with an exemption.

Of course in my rose-tinted view of things, we are a perfect choice for a one year experiment. He's young and he can run. He's not 7 feet tall but he can post. We have a group that has fun on the court and they let it show. We have comraderie. We have arguably one of the most popular coaches among players. We have a good reputation of rewarding players that deserve it. Hell, we have an excellent reputation for rewarding players who DON'T deserve it.

    Back to dreamland.....

Worst case scenario for GH is that he has a blast playing with our players all season. We make the playoffs and lose in the second round. That's probably a better year than he would have had in Detroit.

Best case scenario for GH is that the team bonds quickly and start destroying teams left and right with our speed and athleticism. The Rockets suddenly become Showtime South and steamroll their way to the Finals after sweeping Minnesota, Portland and the Lakers. Then it becomes another Rudy T/Pat Riley showdown in the Finals, again. However, this time we win in 5 games instead of 7.

    Back to reality.....

Man, I sure like dreamland a lot better.

If Im not mistaken, this Grant Hill signing for the exception thing was a concoction by Peter Vecsey right?

Here's what makes absolutely no sense... If Grant Hill signs for 2 mil with a capped out contendor, he will have to play at that wage for THREE years until that team receives his full LBR. I realize he has a strong desire to win but he'll be flushing not just a little money down the toilet but a TRUCKLOAD. Lets say Hill signs a 3 yr deal with a contendor for the exception, thats 3 yrs 6.6 mil. If he played those same three years at the max from Detroit, he would be earning roughly 31 mil over 3 yrs. That means just to play on a better team than Detroit he'd be flushing 25 million down the toilet. Even if the contendor gives him the max after 3 yrs, that 25 million is still gone forever.

Capologists please feel free to point out any flaws in my post. To the best of my knowledge this is how it works.

The big problem with this scenario is that as soon as Hill signs a 1 year deal with a team other than Detroit, he loses his Bird rights. - Hence, after his one year deal, if he wants the maximum, he is limited to signing with a team that is UNDER THE CAP by $14mil (or thereabouts). There is no garantee that there will be A Chicago or Orlando around next year with enough Cap space to sign him. At a minimum it would severely limit his options.

If he signs a one year deal, it will be with Detroit.

MManal - Nice point, and I don't think Hill is willing to take chance that there will be a team out there after one year with the cap space to sign him to the max.

A much better deal for all concerned would be a sign & trade for one year (I'm not aware of anything that says a sign & trade must be for more than one year) In this case,
    a) Detroit gets something in return
    b) Hill gets relatively big bucks ($9mil) next year instead of settling for a lowly exception
    c) He maintains his Bird rights
    d) He can be traded to ANY team that is willing to match salaries in a trade

One small mistake, that's not a truckload of money, it's an entire boatload.

    davo,

Sign and trade contracts have to be for at least 3 years.

Another question: Can the three year deal increase Hill's salary after the first year -- one year at $9 million and the other two years at $11 million (or whatever the figure is)? It would still be a 3 year/$31 million contract, the money just wouldn't be distributed evenly.

Let me reemphasize the difference between a TRUCKLOAD and a BOATLOAD. Since it is a well known fact that boats are holes in the ocean you throw money into, a BOATLOAD would keep filling with more money too lose.

What I don't get is that none of you mentioned that if Hill signs a 1 yr. contract w/us (dreaming I know) then that coincides w/Dream's last yr. then the following yr. he could get a much better deal because that would be 16.00 mil out of our salary cap so we could afford to make him a nice offer but that is the same yr. that if am not mistaken Anderson would be due for his re-signing and as we all know we did a "wink wink" deal w/him and we always reward players that have done that for us .. so Anderson will be getting a nice compensation. Can you guys imagine Hill playing for the Rox ?? Shooooooot that would be BadASS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hope I dont get in trouble........

    3pointer,

Anderson has an option on his contract to extend for a third year at around $2.4mil - which he will probably exercize so he can get full bird rights.

If he did want more money after next year, and we were in the position of having to sign a Grant Hill with money under the cap,it could get sticky, with Anderson quite rightly getting miffed that the money wasn't used to increase his salary. Obviously the best course of action (for us) would be for Anderson to settle for his measly $2.4mil in 2001/2002 and then re-sign using the Larry Bird Exception the following year. (He would only count $4.8mil towards the cap that year until signed).

However, lets say Hill does come here next year (hypothetical people) and we want to try and sign him to the max the following year. My numbers show that AFTER next year, our minimum salary will be around $27mil (http://rocketdavo.tripod.com) assuming we still have Francis, Mobley (signed to a 2 year early bird contract) Anderson, Drew, Rogers, Williams,Thomas and Cato. We would need to add our 2001 rookie (lets say $2mil), any unused esceptions, and it is likely we will have more than 8 players on our roster, so our total payroll would be sitting somewhere above $30mil. That would still not be enough to sign anyone to the maximum, given that the salary cap will be approximately $40 mil.

    aelliot,
Is that 3 year restriction on the Sign & Trade in the Salary Cap FAQ? I couldn't find it the other day.

    Davo,

Aelliott is not talking specifically about sign-n-trades; he is refering to using the Full Bird exception. Look up that exception definition, and I'm sure you'll find it state 3-7 years.

    3pointer,

Are you assuming we are only 4m over the cap right now?

Davo currently has us at $51.3m ($17m over). He is actually underestimating here, because he does not add the trade exception (see FAQ #13). Our Team Salary is really $55.9m.

So, if we use the trade exception (likely), next year we must add another $4.4m as well, placing us at $49m or $14m over. See how we need more than Hakeem's windfall to get big-time cap room.

Being that no one but Nolen and I have spoken up about remaining conservative on spending in foresight of 2001, I think most people on this board will spend too much money this summer and not see the big windfall in 2001 like you also expect.

That's called double dipping dreamcasting (spend big this year and have big-time cap room next year).

Actually, I was specifically talking about sign-n-trades. Here's the quote that I referenced:

"Sign-and-trade deals are only allowed if the contract is for three years or longer. "

The thing about Grant Hill signing with the Rockets. I was under the impression that if he was going to throw away money it would atleast be to play with a contendor, thats why I dont think anyone mentioned the Rockets. The Rockets are just not a contendor right now. Maybe if Hill feels that with his arrival here and a good lottery pick at PF that the Rockets would be contendors soon then he may go for it. He would not have to eat 3 yrs at an exception rate to come here as the Rockets would have good cap space next yr assuming they dont use the 4.4 mil exception as HP pointed out.

Also, I was under the impression that the Shandon option was a team option not a player option? Is that correct? When the Rockets negotiated that option in I felt it was to be able to utilize Hakeem's windfall to sign a FA. I dont think Shandon would be pissed if the Rockets made him play one more yr at 2.4 mil in order to sign a player of Grant Hill's caliber. If there was such a rush for him to get his money, they would not have negoitated that clause into his contract, they would have just done a 2 yr deal.
