You would hear a lot more stories of big-time crimes in Atlanta than you would in Houston.

Sorry, if that didn't make much sense.

Probably Juarez, Mexico for me. Cebu in the Philippines was pretty sketchy too.

    what, like murders? what's a big-time crime?

I lived in Atlanta for a while, and knew where not to go. The city is pretty "good" about keeping the nice places nice and the bad places...out of the way of the nice areas.

For me, it's been Detroit by a good margin. Was there for 3 weeks with work.

Most cities, locals will tell you what to see, where to go, etc. Only in Detroit was that replaced with:
Don't walk around (downtown) looking for a place to eat. Stay inside the building until it's time to go home.
Be aware of everything going on around your car. Keep your doors locked, windows up, and if you need to drive through a red light, do it.
Wait until you're back in Birmingham (hotel) to explore and find places to go.

    Cheers, Detroit.

And I'm a guy that enjoys walking 125th and Fredrick Douglas in Harlem.

sweeping generalizations across the board. NYC is the safest big city in the USA.

ever been to any of those locations you listed? I lived in East Harlem, Washington Heights and Brooklyn, as well as other parts of Manhattan. never had any problems.

Rome & Naples, Italy... lots of thieves in both cities... though they are pretty slick and not "hold you at gun point" dangerous

Houston is pretty bad. Some big cities are pretty well segregated by class and ultimately by race, where you have sides of town where one race is dominant and others that are just the same, albeit a completely different socio economic class. This may not be PC, but those are the type of big cities I tend to prefer, at least you can tell what the 'good' part of town is and you can help create a physical barrier between you and the more shady parts of town.

Then there is Houston, a city that is full of 'good' neighborhoods a block or two away from the 'bad' ones, so it does not really matter much if you are a River Oaks or West University resident, because less than a couple of blocks away the 'hood' is keeping a watchful eye.

My front yard. I hate when cars drive slowly by as I lift weights on my porch. I'm in the middle of pushing 350.

The SBC center is pretty dangerous, not because we are Rockets fan, but because people on this site say it's in the middle of a hood.

Serious though, the worse/scariest part of Houston that I have been to was just north of 610 off of Airline. It looked like an actual rap video. A friend of mine wanted me to take her to her dude's house  The thing is, I couldn't go to his house with her. Probably cause I am a guy or something. So she told me to wait down the street! She was going to drive my truck down there. At this time, she had no license too.

So I was worried about two things.
    Getting my ass jacked up.
    Having my truck jacked up.

    I made it ok.

Houston can be rough, but I don't feel unsafe when I'm home. London and New Orleans are some of the worse I can think of. I heard some horror stories about Detroit from a friend of mine.

I agree Houston after Katrina sucked.

again, please elaborate. which part of queens did you feel unsafe in?

    QUEENS IS HUGE.

there are too many nice neighborhoods to name that outweigh the few bad spots, such as Queensbridge or Jamaica.

Perhaps Budapest, or some asian places.

For BIG cities...Houston most likely. Grew up in Saudi Arabia, but that place is pretty damn safe. (minus the few terrorist incidences in the province. )

Now the town with the most A-holes has to be Austin. Love the outskirts of the city, absolutely beautiful. But there are some f'ed up people there.

You know, I'll have to agree with Barcelona. Been there a few times, the last of which was on a school spanish trip from Switzerland. We stayed in "Beautiful HOtel" which was on that main street (can't think of the name near the zoo)

There was a plaza infront of our hotel, and there were police in riot gear EVERY night. I was asked to buy hasheesh every time I went through the plaza at night to hit the clubs with friends. And it was our SCHOOL that chose that place lol.

New Orleans woud have to be tops for me, followed by Amsterdam and London. In Amsterdam I had a knife pulled on me by a fellow American who was a bum there. I didn't actually know he had a knife until the next day when someone in my party asked me about it!
