Kinda do know what I am talking about... According to Jon Heyman and Tom Verducci of SI.com, "the Red Sox made a play to re-acquire Marlins superstar Hanley Ramirez after losing out to the rival Yankees for star free agent Mark Teixeira." The Marlins listened, but no agreement was reached and talks have ended. The Marlins coveted players such as Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz, but they'd need to be bowled over to trade their young shortstop. Ramirez, 25, is signed at a discount through the 2014 season. Juan C. Rodriguez says trading him would make no sense for the Marlins. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/12/red-sox-attempt.html Yes, they didn't make the deal but the thought they would even listen for a superstar shortstop tells you alot!
that's great...i'd rather be competitive as often as possible. eventually, that's going to pan out better. there are massive amounts of luck in play during every playoff series. and the 2003 marlins betray your point anyway...no one thought that team was winning the WS before the season started. they entered as a wild card and got hot at the right time. the 2009 marlins didn't stick around long enough to see if that could happen for them....because management has sold them all off over and over and over again. plus, there's nothing worse than years and years of long, hot, worthless summers with a team that's out of it by july. the marlins have had that in spades. i grew up with that here in houston. i'd rather not.
LOL.. gotcha. You went from, "They're trading him very soon and have already had talks!" to posting an article that says the Red Sox approached them last year, but the Marlins wanted an insane package and the talks went no where. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for your first proclamation.
LOLOL...This isn't "talks" ?!?!?! I stand by my OPINION that they will trade him pretty soon probably next yr or at the latest the following!
This team doesn't have close to the talent that the '98,'99,'04, and '05 teams had. I'm not even going to waste time bringing up the names because it's not even close. They might be similar in that they are a second half team, but if you think this team can really compete for a WS just because "anything can happen when you make the playoffs", you are fooling yourself. We are overachieving in a bad division and everyone is holding onto false hope that we'll make a miracle playoff run in the unlikely event that we do make the playoffs...and at the same time sacrificing the future! Counting on this team to make the playoffs and then have a bunch of guys put up career performances to get us to the series would be like counting on Aaron Brooks and Luis Scola to become all-stars/all-pro next season and leading us to the NBA finals.
Who did management sell this year? I imagine they will be trading Uggla, but other than that I'm not sure who you're referring to. Especially since they currently have a better record than the Astros by a game, and you're advocating that the Astros are still in it, yet the Marlins haven't stuck around long enough? I agree that losing multiple seasons takes its toll on the fans. The Francis-Mobley days were awful. But the end game is the World Series, and I'd rather only make one playoffs and win the WS in 10 years than be in the playoffs for 9 of those 10 and not win it. It's probably a lot more fun for fans being in the playoffs so much, but 10 years from now, who cares? Who won the title, that's all people remember. I'd rather be one of those 10.
kool and the gang. we'll never agree, then. i've had lots of fun with the astros and they've only sniffed a WS once. this is entertainment to me, and i'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to see them win a WS before i die. but i'm not interested in missing the playoffs for a decade so i can see them win it one time. i may be dead in a decade.
No, it's not. It's an article from last year that says the Marlins demanded the Red Sox future in return for Hanley. Talks is what you would use to describe the Halladay, Cliff Lee situation. It's no different than say the Blazers approaching us about Yao last year, and the Rockets saying, "OK- Roy, Aldridge and Oden" to which the Blazers hang up after. A year later, would you consider the Rockets as having "talks" about trading Yao? I wouldn't.
"the Red Sox made a play to re-acquire Marlins superstar Hanley Ramirez after losing out to the rival Yankees for star free agent Mark Teixeira." The Marlins listened, but no agreement was reached and talks have ended. The Marlins coveted players such as Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz, but they'd need to be bowled over to trade their young shortstop. Sox made a play, Marlins listened and Marlins even meantioned what players would need to be in the deal for it to happened...My definition of "talks"! I guess my friend we will agree to disagree lol
actually it was them i was thinking about....i've enjoyed so much watching 'stros baseball with my two boys. but when they're out of it in june or july, it's not nearly as fun.
Do you have a link for the Marlins being the 7th highest TV market? Not calling you a liar, but I've just been looking for a while and can't find it. Also, do you remember the 2003 playoffs? If the whole Bartman incident didn't happen, then there's a good chance the Cubs would have made it to the World Series and the Marlins only ring would still be the one they bought in 1997. So now you have a team with no fanbase, and no ring. Only one team can win the World Series every year, and there is always plenty of luck involved. In their entire existence, the Marlins have TWICE fielded a team that could even remotely be called competative, and both times the breaks went their way and they got a ring. I'd much rather have the Astros approach, where at least 4 times in the past decade I thought we had a legitimate chance to win it all. I'm not saying the Astros run a great franchise, but saying you'd rather have the Marlins is absurd. P.S. Trying to convince us that the Marlins have a fanbase is pretty funny. Spoiler
Okay but one last parting question -- wouldn't a franchise be idiotic to NOT listening to an offer? My Yao analogy still stands - of course any team will listen, but that's still far, far from saying "they will trade him, they already had talks!"
The soon part was my Opinion after watching there franchsie do it over and over and "talks" part read above...
He signed a 6 year $70 million contract. It is an excellent value for him, but that is the largest deal in their history, and they are only one year into it and getting $5.5 million this season. $7 million next season. $11 million in 2011. $15 million in 2012. $15.5 million in 2013. $16 million in 2014 There's a good chance they will deal him before the 2nd half of his contract kicks in.
This I will agree with..not question but like you said they got him on a sweet discount 6 yr deal yet they still at least "listened" to the Sox...If the Rox had gotten Yao lets say at MLE money(Healthy of course) and the Blazers came to me with that package id wouldn't even "listen"...
I do not have a link, honestly I was going off my buddy whose been a life long Marlins fan (That's 1 in their fan base!). Feel free to prove me (us) wrong if you find one - I asked him for one, but I think he saw it in passing a while back and is too lazy to get one for my argument haha. I briefly looked, but couldn't find a list of the tv ratings either. I'm saying I'd rather have the success they had (2 WS) than the playoff appearances the Astros have had. People thought they were a horrible franchise by trading off their WS talent, yet they came back and won one again. Luck plays a part, but there's a lot more to baseball than just luck. As much crap as their front office gets, they've gotten two rings since 1997 -- something most front offices can't claim for the entire length of their organization. The fan base argument was moreso one of it's not as bad as everyone thinks. Those pictures are funny and telling, but if the tv rating aspect of it is true, that's also telling. Either way, I think the new stadium will go a long way to show just how much of a fan base they have. I don't think the Astros would have as many fans if they had an open roof playing in the middle of the summer either - albeit not as bad as the Marlins. (And for good reason - Houston's much bigger.)
The reason it's backloaded is the new stadium revenues. If they get people into the stadium, they'll likely keep him. If they don't, yeah, they'll definitely trade him (and maybe should fold the whole franchise at that point).
