Long story short: my little bro is back in school at UT-Austin to get a 2nd bachelors in engineering. He moved up to Austin and started taking classes this June.

Now he applied to Rice as well for admission as a Second Degree Student. An old professor of his was slow to send a recomendation letter to the Rice admission office, so he thought he missed the admission deadline earlier this year since the office told him the rec was missing.

He got accepted to UT in late May and never heard back from Rice so end of story, right?

Well, it turns out Rice sent an acceptance letter postmarked July 02 and the deadline for acceptance response was July 16.

Here's where the neighbor comes in. The letter was addressed to bro at the neighbors address. Our street # is xxx9; theirs' is xxx0, so someone at the Rice admissions office had fat fingers and screwed up.

Today (July 28), the neighborhood security guard gave me the admission letter and it was already opened. So apparently my neighbor opened it and sat on it this whole time. Now I don't know if they were on vacation or not; I haven't had a chance to talk to them yet. But since they were too chicken**** to give it to me in person, I gotta believe they were negligent and had their thumbs up their asses.

My bro is going to talk to Rice starting tomorrow and explain the mail mixup and would preferably want to go to school there instead of UT.

If it turns out that Rice can't admit him since the deadline has already passed, what action can I take against the neighbor? Any lawyers on here? Would we be able to sue them for future lost earnings based upon a Rice degree versus a UT degree? Am I reaching?

I am just ****ing livid at my neighbor right now! If I got my neighbor's mail from a college admissions office, I'd give it back to them ASAP.

Thanks for reading; I just needed to get that off my chest.......

Holy crap man.....that's so crappy. There HAS to be some sort of legal action you can take....at the VERY least it has to be some sort of negligence. And I would assume that because it was a clerical error on the part of the university, they would let your brother in. That just sucks that your neighbor is such a prick. What kind of person would do that??

Do the neighbors know your name? You said it was addressed to your brother but at your neighbors house. How would they have known it belonged to your house if they didn't know your name?

I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation... Like that your neighbor's a jackass, for example...

Seriously, what's the deal with that? Have you had issues with them before?

The admissions letter inside the envelope had our correct address on it. They had to have seen it since they opened the envelope.

Okay, it's called mail tampering/theft/vandalism and it's a federal offense. The guy can go to jail for it.

First thing you need to do is report it. Here's the online form:
    United States Postal Inspection Service

No, I had no idea even what the neighbor's names were until I looked it up in our neighborhood directory just now.

Actually, I'd go to Rice first. They sent it to the wrong address. If the outside envelope had the wrong address, and the inside envelope had the correct address, then you've provided the correct address. The mistake, and fault in this case, lies with Rice University.

I'd go to them and explain that there's no way they can expect a response within the outlined time frame if they send letters to incorrect addresses. You took all the necessary steps in a timely fashion.

Your neighbor's a dead end. Had Rice f'ed up the zip code instead of the last number on the address, some other idiot in 'bama would have sat on it instead. The point is, Rice f'ed up, they should fix it.

    Obviously, do it respectfully.

Man, your neighbor is a grade A idiot and/or douchebag. Who opens a piece of mail that is addressed to someone else?

I get alot of wrongly addressed mail and even UPS parcels delivered to my house. I normally just put the mail back in the mail box and write "wrong address" on the mail and it gets picked back up the next day. For UPS parcels that are incorrectly sent I call up UPS directly.

So is it possible they didn't know your name as well? That being the case, how would they know who to give the mail to - it was addressed to their house. Also, perhaps they finally opened it up, saw the real address and then gave it to you.

Depending on the circumstance as to when I received it, I would have written "no such person at this address - return to sender" and dropped it in my mail box. If I had been on vacation, and returned home to find it, and realizing what it was, I may have opened it to see if I could find out more about it since I would have assumed it was time critical.

maybe they only check their mail every few weeks. I do. I just grab it from the mailbox and throw it in a pile. Only go through it when I pay bills.

They did the right thing in giving it to you. It just wasn't when you wanted it, but thats rices fault not theirs. **** happens.

Don't blame your neighbors unless you know they did this on purpose.

I would write "return to sender" and drop it back in the mail. If it's a neighbor's mail, I would return it in person or put it on their doorstep. I would never under any circumstances open a stranger's mail.
