Do you have problems playing DTS on your media center in Windows 7? I have a creative x-fi extreme audio and have problems decoding movie files with DTS. I thought windows 7 media center had that codec.
You're kind of confused. A "crash" can be hardware or software. The hardware in a Mac is pretty much the same hardware you can buy off the shelf for a PC. Comparably equipped (even better-equipped) PC's generally cost less than Macs. You may, however, like the Mac OS better. And you mentioned that you wanted the iPod touch. What am I not understanding here? "Save" $300+ and get the 16" PC laptop and buy a Touch. Hell, go find a better deal on a smaller screen laptop (there have been some recently). That Macbook is a small-screen laptop. Make sure you're ok with that, but like I said, you an probably save another $100 on the laptop by getting a smaller screen PC laptop. As for the printers, most of those that are bundled with computers are lower-end and wouldn't influence my decision, to be honest.
Hmm, I've had no issues with that. Out of habit I install cole2k media pack, but I'm not sure if the codecs are imported to media center of not. I will investigate that for you.
I think XP is the best OS right now. It doesn't take a lot of resources and it is pretty stable and runs a ton of software. Even with win7 what is the real point of upgrading other than just eye candy.
Everyone who says Office for Mac sucks is just wrong. I had a Macbook for two of my three years in law school. I wrote and edited more documents there than you ever will in four years of undergrad. Word for Mac was flawlessly compatible with Word for Windows. The same is true for what I saw of Excel and Powerpoint. The only thing you can't get on Office for Mac is Access, which isn't really a college application anyway unless you're majoring in something specific to databases.
Win7 enables the DirectX 11 API. So if he adds a discrete GPU, DX11 can help offload some compute intensive tasks (like HD encode/decode) from the CPU to the GPU, where they can be done much quicker.
Go with the Mac, and if you are willing to spend a couple of more hundred dollars, go with the aluminum macbook pros. trust me on this, its and investment for the future.
Saying you need a laptop for college /= saying you need a special laptop. And I don't think there's any question that portability for a student is important than for someone who works 9/5 at a desk. For most people a laptop is a convenience not a necessity. A college student who can't find a computer in the library when its crowded needs an alternative. The files are compatible but the actual usability of Word for Mac sucks. Its very slow by comparison. If you only worked on Macs for two years, maybe you didn't notice the speed difference because you didn't have a frame of reference.
Because it is in fact faster than XP? How about support for memory modules greater than 3 gb? Or the fact that Windows 7 runs DX 11 which is 2 generations better of a graphics handler than XP which is stuck at dx9? Or the fact XP can only support 2 cores? Or the fact that XP can only thread to one core for OS resources? How about the fact that photoshop in dx11 is 10x faster than XP? Love XP soo much that you can't bare running programs in 7, no problem, Windows 7 comes with XP Compatability mode as well!!! The list goes on my friend, eye candy alone is a sad sad understatement. The boys at microsoft completely retooled this OS. Let's not overlook the fact that this OS has fewer security holes than XP and a smarter less intruisive version of defender and UAC.
I'm using Windows 7 right now. It's great, and I highly recommed it. I'm on a 2 year old laptop(Don't know specs), and it runs beautifully. Fast, slick, instinctive features...It's great, and I would make sure I was eligible for an upgrade if I were buying a laptop.
You are automatically eligible for an upgrade to Windows 7 if you buy a Windows Vista laptop between June 26, 2009 through January 31, 2010 for Dell, HP, Lenovo, Toshiba, Gateway, and Sony. So, pretty much you're guaranteed Windows 7.
maxbook sucks my friend failed his final because his macbook died on him twice in the same week for no reason
macbooks are for girls. theres alot of gender confused people in austin so you see guys carrying macbooks all the time. its a sad story
I vote for the Mac because, well....I own Apple stock. But in all seriousness, get what works for you. Personally, I'm going back to Mac as soon as my Toshiba dies.
