Bud Selig instituted realignment/Wild Card, revenue sharing, & replay. He has also managed to quadruple revenues. The guy has been successful. The players union is the problem, not Selig. The only thing I hate that Selig doing is making the All-star game count. It hasn't improved the quality of the game, and it is ridiculously unfair when the teams that make the World Series may not have anyone actually play in the game.
Wait? How exactly do you do that? Enforce a shot limit? What? Boston was pretty mediocre for the better part of two decades! Here's all the teams I can think of that have at the very least been considered "contenders" for the championship over the past twenty years: Houston, Phoenix, Dallas, Sacramento, Seattle, New York, New Jersey, Orlando, Cleveland, Detroit, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago, Indiana, Miami, Utah, Minnesota, Boston, Los Angeles, Portland. That's 2/3 of the NBA. There's at least twenty other teams that have "had a chance."
Allow hand checking again. It at least added more value to role players. I'd love to see the NBA get some physical play back.
How many teams have actually won it all in the last 30 years. LA San Antonio Boston Miami Chicago Houston Detroit Philidelpia And in any given year, there are at most 4 teams that have a real chance. In some years (Laker run, Chicago second run), there really wasn't a chance at all unless there were injuries. The best thing about the NFL is the saying "any given Sunday". How do we make the league more competitive? Get rid of the superstar calls for one. Using fiba rules is another option. Have a hard cap where teams would find it difficult to have more than one max player.
I wouldn't be too quick to give anybody credit for success of the league overall, in many cases it's beyond their control. It's not like Roger Goodell suddenly invented the NFL one day. As long as the teams are making money, they are pretty much doing their jobs. Which distinctly disqualifies Bettman and his multiple Chapter 11 franchises.
amen to that...that league has fallen off so far it's ridiculous. i don't mean that from the quality of the game on the ice or anything like that....just from the standpoint of where it stands in relation to other pro sports.
