who is it? David Stern - The longest tenured guy, but his league is a distant third, and many teams are faccing hardships. Selig - Revenue and Attendance are at an all time high. His league still has payroll issue and the steroids issue Roger Goodell - Has the most popular league. Despite his heavy handed justice, his league has the most criminals of any other league. gary bettman Fixed their financial mess. His league is the least popular.
NFL - Roger Goodell is probably the best right now because there isn't any dirt on him yet. Its almost on unfair comparison at this point. All he's really done is crack down on player behavioral issues. NBA - The NBA has become increasingly popular since he took over, thanks in part to Michael Jordan, but has still thrived even after the 98 lockout. My main problem with Stern is he still hasn't done enough to investigate the refs in his league, especially after the Donaghy thing. Doesn't help that they aren't taken care of as well compared to NFL refs and MLB umps. Bud Selig oversaw the steroid era that ruined baseball. Nuff' Said. NHL, I'm not at liberty to discuss because I know next to nothing about it.
I'm no Bud Selig fan...but record revenues (nearly equivalent to the NFL's) and record attendance = baseball is ruined??
I wouldn't say baseball is ruined forever, but an entire era is tainted thanks to his laissez-faire attitude.
Well, this can be explained simply due to NFL rosters being so much larger than the other sports. I think that Goodell gets my pick because he's sustaining the league's popularity at home while at the same time trying to expand the international profile of the game. Selig is a close second, but baseball needs to modernize the game a little by eliminating some of the stoppages of play that slow the game down.
I think the media cares a whole lot about that...clearly paying fans do not. I think it's laughable to suggest that with revenues matching the NFL's, baseball is ruined; forever or otherwise.
Baseball has NOBODY to blame but itself for the steroid era. They kept a blind eye about it when everyone was bringing it up. I have ZERO problem with the current banning of steroids, but to go in the past on rumors to find steroid violators is reprehensible. The country should sue the league for fraud.
I voted Selig. He has the hardest time of any commissioner. The MLBPA is perhaps the toughest union in America, definitely in sports. If MLB ever gets salary caps, player maximums, and a bonus scale for draftees it would be the biggest win in sports. I like Goodell, but he hasn't been at the helm that long, and the league had grown to dominance under Tagliabue. He could move to the top if a Rookie wage scale is instituted somehow. You can't have rookies making what established vets make. I would live with a rule that says rookie contracts can not exceed the average salary at that position. I hate David Stern. I don't trust him at all. He has worked hard to make himself one of the faces of the league, rather than a backdrop. The NHL seems to have fallen from the big 4. They have to ask networks to televise their games. It isn't necessarily Bettman's fault considering hockey could never match the NFL or MLB in the US, but he suffered more than anyone when they missed a season a few years back.
Fans are fickle, but the roid allegations will remain with the players from that era forever. Even guys who weren't named McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, Clemens, etc. That is an entire period of baseball that is tainted. Selig had a responsibility to the integrity of the game to crack the whip and instead he stuck his fingers in his ears. I really don't see how he can allow all that to go on and still be considered a great commish just because fan interest is at an all time high. Sports are more popular now than ever thanks to how accessible they've become because of advancements in technology and the subsequent new marketing that develops from them. You can follow the players on twitter, you can watch highlights 24/7, watch games on your computer, etc. It doesn't take a genius to keep up with the flow of the times. Goodell and Stern are actively trying to bring their products overseas and make their leagues global. I don't think you can conclude that just because revenue is up and fan interest is improving that Selig is a great commish.
How many violent offenders are their in the NBA or MLB. The reason there are more criminals in the NFL is because there are more players and they don't make as much money.
I don't like Selig and I'm not ready to call him a great commish. But I never called him a great commish...I was responding to the notion that baseball is "ruined." I don't think that could be further from the truth. And if record revenues were that easy, the NBA and the NHL would be reaching them, as well.
I say Goodell. The NBA and MLB both have huge question marks when it comes to the integrity of the game. The NBA hasn't done anything to clean up the officiating mess that was uncovered, and there is also an overwhelming sense that all they care about is marketing the big stars. Then there's baseball and the steroid era. Not sure Selig could've done much to prevent it from happening, but it doesn't look good on him. The NFL has done a solid job of marketing the sport and teams over individual players, officials are generally held in a high regard, and there is not an overwhelming drug/steroid problem affecting the game. Not that there aren't steroids in the NFL, but at least they have policies in place. The biggest problem is the players and the law, and they've done a good job of doling out punishment to players that do break the law. EDIT: I can't believe the NBA is tied for first in this poll right now. People really think that Stern, who has yet to rectify the officiating situation and hands out absurd fines to any coaches or players who criticize it, is a good commish?
David Stern is the most powerful man in sports. What Stern wants Stern gets. Dress code Age Requirement Drop in Fights Bud Selig is a joke and comes off as a fool. Steriod Era Tie Allstar game This time it counts. Goodell is doing a good job right now, but is he really that much different than Tagliabue except for the disciplinarian aspect. He also has it easy comparatively speaking because he has to deal with a weak players union. Im going to go with Darth Stern. His will and mind tricks have shaped the NBA in his image
i think we're kidding ourselves if we think NFL players aren't using steroids. it's just that no one cares when it's in the NFL. see Merriman, Shawne
