Yet another 100+ degree day in Austin w/o a hint of rain. There was a report on the news about a town out towards Burnet that was at the bottom of Lake Buchanan...Bluffton. When they dammed the Colorado, the town was forced to pick up and move 5 miles to the west. You can now start to see the top of a couple of buildings where the original town was.
You're both wrong. It's Bill Gates. Bill Gates! "Good news," nothing. He's just trying to kill off Austin's competitive threat to his Silicon Valley friends & his Redmond fortress.
Lake Travis looks awful. Didn't even know this was going on (we've had near-normal rainfall this year where I live).
Yeah, the population boom doesn't help. Lavon was actually 4 feet above normal levels 2-3 months ago. Then we got slammed with the 100 degree weather. Lavon is just one of the 4 or 5 sources the NTMWD uses to get water. I could've sworn they added 1 or 2 more sources recently due to the shortages and demands back during 2006. I know we get water from Lake Texoma and a couple of other lakes/reservoirs as well, but I believe Lavon is the primary source for a large portion of North Texas.
This seems like the hottest Texas I can remember, but one of the guys at poker the other night said that the Almanac predicted a cooler rainier August. Yeah, right... DD
Go here (http://www.yelp.com/biz/dons-fish-camp-eskimo-tubes-martindale). It's cheap, there is plenty of water and there are no restrictions on the size of the cooler.
YIKES! The Guadalupe is running at <100 cfs (currently around 60cfs). That doesn't bode well, Ruby. Maybe you could try the San Marcos River? Not any rapids, but cool water and plenty of good times to be had. Good luck!
The Almanac had also predicted an upper Texas coast hurricane at the end of July. Don't really see that happening...
The Statesman had an article on it a few days ago... http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/2009/07/26/0726drought.html
Been raining since yesterday afternoon. Still at it out there. Plus, I don't know if we'll get higher than 85 degrees today. So nice and cool outside. It's about damn time.
we booked everything already and 15 ppl from all over texas (mostly dallas, don't worry, not mavs fans) will be there. we'll just make the most of it.
About a month ago we went camping on the Guadalupe with plans to float. Since the river was so slow we just got a cooler of beer and got in our tubes in front of our camp site and just sat out in the water away from the middle of the river where the water wasn't moving at all. We spent hours out there without having to do much to stay in the same place. There were no rapids but I don't really like the rapids anyway.
wow! that bad? i'll have to keep this in mind. that sounds like it'll be cool (temperature) and you still can do all the drinking too.
make sure you get out there early. About a 12 or 15 years ago (the 90's are mostly a haze to me), I went out there with some friends. It was one of the really bad years. The water wasn't moving. We went to get on the river about 1 pm. The rental place told us they wouldn't pick us up past 8 pm. No one even thought that it would take us more than 7 hours. Well...9 hours later we had to hitch a ride back to the rental place/camp ground. We actually had to swim a good portion of it. It was miserable. We had run out of beer and other provisions about 4 hours in. I couldn't move my arms the next day from trying to swim with the tube.
well, what I hear is that due to El NiƱo conditions (?) supposedly we should have a mild hurricane season and a lot of rain. I'm ready, but so far... nada. Lake Travis is taking a beating. The drought conditions are masking the other problem, which has come up and is the amount of people drawing water from the lake(s). There's a lot of information about it here. I don't know how real it is, but when you're looking at the levels we're seeing now, it's startling perspective. I'm hoping the rumors of rain and better yet light hurricane season are all true.
Wow, things have really changed over here. Under a flash flood watch all day tomorrow, expecting more heavy rain.
