Did you get sold on the FUTURE IN SPACE propaganda? Did you believe in the images, perpetuated through every form of media, of the then-soon-to-arrive technological wonderland awaiting us? A world where space was only a short spaceship trip away, where robots regularly interacted with us?

I think it's time, for those of us who have not yet realized, that we admit to ourselves that we're NOT going to live on the moon, that we're NOT going to have hovercars or antigravity packs, and that it's pretty likely we won't even have anthropomorphic talking robots living in our homes.

I suppose the possibility still remains that we could have a TRON-like experience but, considering how quickly the whole Virtual Reality concept crashed and burned in the marketplace, that experience will have to be manufactured through individual initiatives.

But what about everything else? I mean, I could even settle for some of the more dystopian portrayals of the technological-wonderland-still-waiting-in-the-wings just as long as I get my ******* hovercar and my ******* studio apartment on Moon Colony 3. I'll fight some damn sentient robots to get that stuff - but with no sentient robots, and no laser guns to fight them with, I'm just disappointed.

So ... do you feel ripped off by THE FUTURE?

I know the hunter-gathers feel really ripped off because they didn't have Krogers.

    Ripped off? No.
    Impatient? Yes

Hunter-gatherers didn't have television shows, movies, magazines and such displaying wondrous grocery stores of the future.

    Yes. Yes. YES.

I want at the very least virtual reality by the time I'm old so I can pretend I'm not.

    I'm also very drunk.

But that doesn't change the way I feel.

I'm posting from the toilet while I poo.

While I'd want cool stuff, I'd want the cool stuff in the future's sci fi books too.

    lol..

I dont feel ripped off. More disappointed that we seem to fear the future more than embrace it like past generations did. We're more focused on technological disasters than the technology that ENHANCES life. Its like people want to make bunkers more than moon bases.

Guys like Buzz Aldrin in commemoration of the moon landing are saying that was good, now lets try to get people to walk on MARS. I like my traditional, organic, ordinary life dont get me wrong. But thats the kind of inspiration and sense of wonder we dont get as much of anymore.

I dont have to have a laser gun lifetime. As long as they dont lose the spirit, and dont put laser guns in the wrong hands, its all we can ask for.

I remember seeing Disney's TV programs about our "future" in space. The way they portrayed the future space station, designed with help from Wernher von Braun, was a trip. The 1950's were filled with thoughts and ideas about our future, driven by great science fiction, and brilliant men like von Braun. Walt Disney "gave it to the masses." Had you asked anyone back then, from scientists, to sci-fi writers (many being brilliant scientists themselves), to people like me, you would never imagine that we would only have attained what we have today. Everyone thought we would be far advanced in many, many areas. There have been surprises, like tiny computers and the internet, that weren't thought of back then, but we're very behind what we thought would be accomplished.

    Bummer.

I am a little dissapointed that space travel didn't advance more but even though I'm a fan of sci-fi I didn't expect us to advance as much a lot of sci-fi portrayed. While we don't have flying cars (a very bad idea anyway) consider how much of sci-fi has come true. We have the World Wide Web, cell phones, gene sequencing and all sorts of technology that a few decades ago only existed in the realm of science fiction.

    two words:

    ubiquitous p*rn

    All my youthful dreams fulfilled.

If you want to separate fact from fiction in futurist projections look at the energy budget. You never get a free lunch.

What was your favorite time travel movie? I would have to say "Paycheck". The movie was a bit more complex and probably more scientifically sound than your typical time traveler movies.

What is the movie where the guy randomly travels back in time without wanting to and finally prepares with a gun one time but is taking a shower when he travels.

I think the same movie involves some super secret sound weapon that makes stuff crumble. From the 1980's.

    Found it

    Biggles: Adventures in Time 1986

I think 1986 was the best year ever.

It will all happen eventually. Once there is impending doom on Earth (asteroids, sun burning out, etc..) humans will have to stretch the realm of possibility for survival's sake. Technology will advance and such expeditions will become profitable, increasing the likelihood that investors will back them, thus making them reality. It's only a matter of time really. The advances of the last 50 years, and especially the last 20 blow everything done in the past out of the water. None of this was imaginable to people living just 70 years ago. If we take this into account and use it as our principle, I think it's a safe bet that the future holds more of the same rapid advancement as seen in recent years.
