That's a big assumption that is based on man's limited knowledge of what they think is still left to study. Physics is dead? Wow....okay...man must know it all now. Let's see man create the laws of physics...or better yet, how about new ones; a new physics since we have reached the limit of the physics already created. Surely since we learned it so quickly we can create a new physics with our own laws. I'm not a scientist, so I want try to get into or argue the details of scientific discovery. I am very comfortable with the top scientists in the world realizing that we still have a vast amount that we don't know and can still learn in all the fields of science. One field of science might open up new horizons to more fields in astronomy and physics. To declare we are at the end or that anything is almost dead is ludicrous, imho. Says who other than you? When did common sense take over science? Where do you think all of the intelligent design in science and it's laws came from? Does it make common sense to believe that all of the multi billions of calculations and probabilities just so happened to randomly happen in order to get it right for all of this creation to exist with the precision it does? Or does science suggest intelligent design? Who said that God had a "conscious" like we do? How exactly are you defining conscious anyway? And you just said that the universe was created, created by whom or what? What does science tell you? Or is your common sense overriding your scientific mind? So if there is a god? Does that mean you are agnostic instead of atheist? Many people around this earth imagine "God" very differently. I don't think you can lump all of mankind into the Judeo/Christian concept of God. So however you think "people" imagine God, it's a stereotype that is limited by your own experiences; not actually what different people believe differently throughout the earth. By the way, if there is a "god", according to the definition of the term, he would have to know that we exist or he wouldn't be "god". Are you possibly suggesting that there are scientists that are NOT human? How did you come to this conclusion? Was there any scientific tests to prove this is why humans want to believe God exists? Or is this another one of your common sense conclusions? There is plenty of evidence to support that God exists. Just study the creation itself. The creation is a BOOK. Read it just like you read books with printed letters in them. It might seem like a foreign language at first, but if you study it long enough, you will start to understand that it is pointing you to the same conclusion. God created all of this for a purpose and that's why there are laws; for physics and man. I am still not sure if you are an atheist or agnostic. You sound more like an agnostic, but that would make you somewhat irrational according to your usage. They call it faith because man was created to believe in the unseen. To believe in more than his five senses could grasp hold of. To use his reason, intellect and heart to ascertain the truth beyond what he can see clearly. We believe in many things that we can not "see", but we have come to PROVE that they do actually exist and benefit us as humans in many ways, even without our knowledge, or without us doing anything to deserve this. This is a sign of God to man. Man was given intellect to contemplate his existence, creation and his purpose and thereby fulfill it if he is so inclined to do so. I hope that you see I am not mixing God and religion together. Religion is mostly man made, while God gives man free will, but laws to live by just like the creation in order to have peace and harmony. Man causes his own hardship to himself and others by disobeying these natural laws, which are the true "religion". Just my two cents.
Just googled: einstein god. First link: http://www.spaceandmotion.com/albert-einstein-god-religion-theology.htm [rquoter] A knowledge of the existence of something we cannot penetrate, of the manifestations of the profoundest reason and the most radiant beauty - it is this knowledge and this emotion that constitute the truly religious attitude; in this sense, and in this alone, I am a deeply religious man. (Albert Einstein) I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it. (Albert Einstein, 1954) I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings. (Albert Einstein) [/rquoter]
if I'm not mistaken, einstein believed in the personal god. much like Frank Tipler and the 80 year old cosmlogist/atheist who changed his mind.....ahhh, his name eludes me.... at any rate they both concluded, that according to their life long studies they belived that physics proved there is no doubt a creator exsits. Maybe not the christian creator you and I are aware of........but at least a cretor is valid.
you're right. I was mistaken. I re-read rich deem's site and Einstien was actually 100% against the idea of a personal god. I am fairly certain it was Tipler and the other atheist/cosmologist who changed his mind (according to physics) about a creator. I want to say Andrew Newberg, but I don't think that is correct......too tired and lazy to search. I'll try to produce a name and link tomorrow.......if you care.
I dont have a link for this but I think I remember Bono once saying that he respected Athiests because they had at least given some consideration to the existence or non existence of a god. A lot of people dont even consider it. Whether they are just daft or what, I dont know how you could not form an opinion one way or another.
So why is it that Bono assumes that atheists have given thought to the existence of God, but non-atheists haven't given thought to the non-existence of God? That quote makes no sense.
Physics isn't at an end and astronomy most definately isn't. Consider the tidal wave of discoveries we are making as our telescopes get more powerful. As for physics there have been people saying for more than a century that physics was at an end, that a Grand Unified Theory would be discovered, but that still remains elusive. Experimental physics yes is becoming almost impossible to conduct given the requirements as you note but that doesn't mean that there aren't still some very big unanswered questions in physics. I agree with this and as I said the existence of God isn't a scientific question.
He WASN'T saying non athiests hadn't thought about it - he was saying he was ok with athiests because they clearly HAD, and therefore he didnt look down on them, and indeed respected them.
How does he know that they clearly HAD? The quote I found using google has Bono saying he admires his atheist friends because they have the courage to be atheists.
Thats probably right, I apologise if I have blended two different statements and put them in Bono's mouth as one.
Am I the only one who's been thinking in the back of their mind a parody of Crocodile Dundee "You call that a God? This is a God?" Really? I'm the only one...
Yes mate. Croc Dundee, Kangaroos and Shrimps on the Barbie. That's really all we do with our lives down here.
Unless there's something special about this being PUBLIC transportation and merging that with religious issues, I agree with you entirely. Oddly enough, I visited the church I'm part of first because of a little mailer that looked a lot like those signs....it had a picture of a donut with a halo over it with a bright, blue, beautiful sky behind it....and the words below it were: "If there's a God, you'll be glad you came. If not, well at least we had donuts." I knew right then, that was my kind of church!
Apparently they thought so too. http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20090808/NEWS/908080334/-1/BUSINESS04
